The tonal theme of this photoshoot was set as retro, decadent, and moody, heavily inspired by that unique blend of trance-like delirium and sharp lucidity belonging to the genius girl in The Queen's Gambit. To better present this atmosphere, we invested considerable effort into the styling. The signature reddish-brown wavy curls serve as the soul, carrying an unbridled retro feel. For the outfit, a basic white fitted knit short-sleeve top was paired with a loose gray cardigan, while black ultra-shorts not only elongated the leg lines but also made the overall attire look more casual. Wearing the cardigan half-dropped effectively reveals the lines of the shoulders, neck, and collarbones, adding a sense of breathability and languidness to the frame.
The scene was set in a retro room with mottled, distressed walls, featuring a black vintage leather sofa adorned with metal rivet decorations as the main focal point. Prop selection is crucial for emotional expression: a wooden chess set, scattered chess pieces, and that glass of amber whiskey in hand—these elements combined instantly maxed out that story-driven vibe of intoxication, deep thought, and subtle decadence.
In conveying emotion, I tried putting aside my usual big smiles, communicating with the camera instead through a calm, even slightly detached gaze. Sometimes looking straight into the lens, other times gazing to the side, paired with actions like resting my chin on one hand, toying with a chess piece, or holding a glass. To make the decadent feel more natural, a smoking posture was also incorporated, where the curling smoke further accentuated the mood. Regarding posing guidance, the photographer advised me to relax my body as much as possible—such as sitting cross-legged on the floor, leaning sideways against the edge of the sofa, or casually crossing my legs. These everyday yet slightly defensive postures effectively convey the character's inner loneliness and intense focus.
In terms of photography, lighting frequently utilized rim-backlight or soft low-key lighting, which beautifully contours facial features and leaves appealing shadows on the skin, giving the images greater dimensionality and a cinematic quality. Medium-to-long focal lengths with wide apertures were heavily used to blur out the cluttered background environment, locking the visual focus firmly onto the subject and core props.
The overall color grading leans dark, dominated by warm browns and gray-blacks. Post-processing avoided excessive skin smoothing, preserving authentic skin textures to better fit this retro moody theme. The resulting atmospheric feel is truly phenomenal, with every single shot resembling a static movie snippet. As an experiment in mood portraiture, I feel these retro and decadent elements were blended together just right.
