The absolute core of this outdoor shoot was the wind. To recreate that classic feeling in AIR (AIR) where Misuzu Kamio gazes into the far distance against the breeze, we deliberately chose a day with pristine weather, eschewing artificial wind blowers to rely entirely on the natural breeze.
Starting with the uniform: a classic white collared shirt paired with a deep navy pinafore dress. The red ribbon tie at the collar serves as the focal point of the styling, and I carefully adjusted it to match the canonical design as closely as possible. Regarding the wig, Misuzu's golden hair is extraordinarily iconic; the high ponytail and that long white ribbon are its very soul. To prevent the wig from looking artificial, I thinned and smoothed the synthetic fibers multiple times, paying meticulous attention to layering during styling to achieve a realistic texture that fluttered in the wind without turning messy. I also tested several materials for the hair ribbon before ultimately settling on a lightweight satin ribbon with subtle structural body, ensuring it held graceful, sweeping arcs in the wind.
Standing beneath the azure sky and white clouds, the sun was dazzlingly bright. To catch the glint and luster of hair strands in the sunlight, the photographer constantly worked with backlight angles. That distinctive anime-style highlight seen in key art requires patient tuning through real-world lighting and post-production. I specifically created a side-by-side comparison with the original illustration this time, aiming to showcase the journey from 2D artwork to 3D reality. The upper tones were intentionally calibrated toward an anime-like crisp freshness, paying homage to the iconic massive planet backdrop from the original key visual.
When people mention Misuzu Kamio, many instinctively think of 'tears of an era.' The sentiment that 'even wings that cannot fly still have meaning in their existence' remains deeply moving no matter how many times you revisit it. In channeling her, I did my best to convey an aura that was gently innocent yet quietly resilient. The gesture of smoothing my hair with both hands was partly a posed choice, but also practical because the gusts were quite strong and needed taming; yet it unexpectedly captured a wonderfully organic, candid moment.
We spent considerable time vetting garment textiles as well. The shirt was made from breathable cotton, while the pinafore dress avoided flimsy draping in favor of a weightier fabric, allowing the pleats to hold their structure and flow with satisfying body when turning or walking into the wind. Taking on classics from that golden era brings considerable pressure, as everyone's nostalgic memories run deep and slight discrepancies stand out easily. For makeup, I opted for a clean, translucent everyday base that emphasized pure, clear eyes without heavy contouring, striving for an unembellished, natural elegance.
Every outdoor shoot feels like a dialogue with the character—capturing those frozen frames from the screen in 3D reality is a magical journey in itself. We endured bugs in the grass and braved the scorching sun just to dial in the camera angles, but seeing those final frames of golden hair drifting against the blue sky and summer clouds made every bit of effort completely worthwhile.
