[Yan Xie Cosplay] Black Suit in Breaking Through the Clouds, Returning to the Ranks Beneath Industrial Ruins

I prepared for this shoot for quite a long time, running out to the old Hangang plant site under the blazing sun. The theme of Breaking Through the Clouds inherently carries a cold, gritty, and suspenseful tone. To match the character's aura of navigating through dangerous situations, we specifically chose this venue filled with heavy industrial ruins and abandoned steel frames. The weather on the day of the shoot was actually quite nice, but inside this massive abandoned steel skeleton, the sunlight was sliced into strips, casting shadows and lights rich with storytelling.

As for gear preparation, I did my research on this black suit cosplay and light blue shirt setup—it needed to have sharp tailoring and a uniform feel, with fabric chosen to be as stiff and structured as possible so it wouldn't wrinkle in front of the lens. To add a sense of battle fatigue and realism, the makeup artist specially drew a faint blood-tinged scar on my face. Combined with the walkie-talkie and prop gun in hand, the character's presence was instantly established.

The shooting process was actually tireder than imagined, having to search for suitable camera positions inside this complex industrial maze. For instance, in that close-up shot of the walkie-talkie, light just happened to spill down through the steel frames above onto half of my face, catching that deep, somewhat wary look in my eyes. To capture that sense of distance, the photographer almost pressed their entire upper body against the iron railings, which was truly dedicated. As for those shots on the railroad tracks, to create a cinematic low-angle sense of pressure, we adjusted aperture values across several stops, repeatedly trying to let the gravel and rail lines form strong visual leading lines.

The keynote of the whole set leans toward cool color tones, emphasizing a solemn, stern, and capable feel. The Hangang photography site was indeed a major plus—those rusted staircases, thick concrete pillars, and mottled cement walls accentuated the character's solitary courage and isolation perfectly. During breaks in shooting, walking through the abandoned factory building with props in hand, there were even a few moments where I felt genuinely integrated into this environment, almost entranced.

Of course, shooting outdoors like this came with many unexpected situations—such as strong winds messing up my hair, or harsh light angles making my expression look overly fierce. However, I feel this unpredictability under natural light and shadows adds a layer of vividness compared to studio shoots. From planning to final output, this set took about a week or so; fortunately, Teacher Shisan had great camera sense and control, and I really love the final product. The costume details, action tension, and overall industrial environment worked together to restore the character's calm, capable, yet subtly contrasting traits. I hope everyone can feel the solemn atmosphere and hard-boiled demeanor in these photos. This set recorded my current state and fulfilled a small wish to shoot a finished set.
