The convention photos for Liu Qiyue (Liu Qiyue cosplay) are finally out! Faithfully recreating this styling was quite a challenge for me, especially that voluminous, vivid orange wig. To preserve its fullness, I used nearly half a bottle of setting spray before heading out and inserted internal supports into the mesh cap; otherwise, it would have easily deflated on the crowded convention floor. The headpiece was a true test of patience: that golden vine-branch crown and the teardrop blue gem at the forehead relied heavily on bobby pins and styling adhesive to stay locked in place. To ensure my forehead looked clean on camera without revealing clips, I repositioned them repeatedly. On the cosmetics side, to match the character's aura, I applied warm reddish-orange eyeshadow gradients paired with contact lenses and hand-painted white tribal totems on my cheeks. Such high-saturation hues often get washed out under complex convention lighting, so I applied everything with a heavier hand than usual.
When I first unboxed the costume, the textiles felt far more substantial than expected. The halter top features a soaring bird motif with a brilliantly striking color scheme. What required the most vigilance were the golden tassels tracing the arms and waist—they tended to tangle mid-stride, so I tacked on concealed snap fasteners along the inner seams to keep them anchored. The convention crowds were massive; to find an uncluttered background, the photographer and I circled the floor several times before locating a relatively clean corner. To harmonize with the site's cool ambiance, post-processing avoided oversaturating the colors, preserving the venue's authentic live atmosphere.
For the first sequence of poses, we explored fluid, graceful dance postures where finger extensions and coordinated eye contact were essential to express the garment's airy lightness. The spear shots were physically demanding; to capture the dynamic flutter of the plush tufts at the weapon's tip, I had to continuously recalibrate my grip and the thrusting arc. Even though the spear was a lightweight prop, projecting genuine martial power required locking my core tight—otherwise, the posture would look limp. Lighting on site was critical: the photographer brought two strobe lights that crisply brought out fabric textures and specular details, with the blue-to-orange gradient feathered collar looking exceptionally luminous under the beams. To lock in superior action frames, we repeated the same setups over a dozen times, constantly regulating breathing and shifting centers of gravity. At times, securing a single hand close-up demanded holding a deep semi-squat for several minutes. Because the wardrobe embraces prominent cutouts and exposed skin, posing required guarding against wardrobe malfunctions while consciously flexing muscle lines, demanding solid body conditioning so physical expressions remained open, organic, and graceful.
Completing this convention gallery deepened my appreciation for this styling. Despite unexpected setbacks on set, seeing the final photos made every bit of pre-production prep and continuous on-site maneuvering feel completely worth it.
