[D.Va cosplay] Overwatch Magical Girl White Studio Shoot Record

Shooting Overwatch's D.Va in a magical girl style—bringing out the Nocturna D.Va concept—was an idea on my bucket list for a long time. This time it finally came to life in the white studio of Changchun Shihun Photography Studio, and the whole process turned out even more fitting for this look than I had imagined for a Changchun photoshoot booking.

Let's start with the outfit. The top utilizes a glossy black material as its base; that patent-leather-like highlight texture really pops under the white studio ambient light. On the chest sits an oversized magenta multi-layered bow tie, which has great stiffness that doesn't sag, anchoring the upper body's visual center wonderfully. The semi-transparent black mesh arm sleeves are another detail I love, adding a touch of ethereal dreaminess to the otherwise sleek black patent leather top.

The lower half features a magenta pleated short skirt echoing the headpiece, adorned with subtle glitter accents that shimmer alluringly under studio lights. Of course, one soul of this look is the black pantyhose. Moderate-density black tights paired with black leather thigh straps and small magenta bows, along with shiny black high heels, elongate the leg lines. This is why I especially enjoyed doing single-leg hops or hands-on-hip standing poses to best display the balanced detail of this D.Va cosplay.

For hair and styling, a lot of effort went into this setup. Special thanks to editor Jinxi for her dedication to hair details—the bangs received magenta highlight treatments, complementing the pair of patent-leather magenta rabbit-ear hair accessories atop the head. This kept D.Va's energetic attributes while adding exclusive identifiers for the Nocturna D.Va setting. Holding the signature pink mecha gun prop tied the entire magenta and black color palette together seamlessly.

The collaboration on shooting day was delightful. Photographer @Haise adjusted the studio lights perfectly. As everyone knows, while a white studio is clean, White studio photography really tests light-and-shadow control; if lighting is too hard, black patent leather develops ugly washed-out white reflections. Teacher Haise specially adjusted softbox positions and light ratios so that in the final images, patent leather highlights remained soft while retaining full material texture. The photo set relied not on exaggerated post-processing to reshape contours, but on solid lighting and pose guidance to present authentic personal charm.

In terms of poses, I tried several angles: holding the pink mecha gun in one hand while making a victory sign with the other, standing confidently with hands on hips looking into the lens, or balancing on one leg as if turning around for a quick glance. These movements aimed to express the "sweet & cool" side of this look before the lens—possessing both a magical girl's sweetness and a mecha girl's crisp demeanor.

In the minimalist environment of a white studio without distracting background elements, all focus naturally lands on facial expressions, costume tailoring, and prop details. That is the huge advantage of studio shoots—it allows a pure evaluation of how an outfit translates into reality. Though this look has many components—bows, headpieces, leg straps, gloves, and pleated skirts—it never feels visual clutter; instead, unified color logic and material contrast create fantastic layering.

Now that this set is successfully completed, it marks a new milestone unlocked in my D.Va cosplay journey. While keeping the original setting, this outfit incorporated texture modifications leaning toward magical girl aesthetics. I am extremely pleased with the result, making all the studio adjustments and detailed hair retouching completely worth the effort.
