Today, I finally wrapped up the shoot for Kasugano Sora's Japanese-style ensemble, and I wanted to note down a few details from pre-production to the final frames. The wig is long, straight, silver-white hair with blunt bangs and elongated sidelocks. To recreate the character's layered aesthetic, I added white flowers and ruffled hair accessories atop the head. The makeup focused primarily on defining the eyes, using a reddish-brown eyeshadow base paired with light reddish-brown colored contacts, finished with a vivid classic red lip to project a cool, aloof, yet refined texture.
The garment itself is packed with intricate details. The outer dark Sora Kasugano kimono features wide, flowing sleeves made of fabric printed with white floral and botanical motifs, with white ruffles stitched along the inner cuffs to add visual depth. Beneath it lies a white dress tailored with a fluffy, pleated skirt. The waist is cinched with a wide white obi adorned with dark botanical patterns, accented by a long white tassel that sways gently with each step, bringing an airy dynamism to movement.
For the lower half, I paired white crew socks with black Mary Jane shoes, anchoring the palette cleanly around black, white, and silver. In terms of props, I brought along a grey floppy-eared plush bunny with long, drooping ears and a white ribbon tied around its neck. This bunny was an immense help on set—whether held in my arms, carried by hand, or resting by my side, it brought vibrant life to each composition. I also prepared a small wooden folding fan.
The location chosen was a traditional Japanese-style courtyard. Outdoors, there were wooden verandas, white gravel grounds, and lush greenery, set against a backdrop dressed with an abundance of pink artificial cherry blossoms. Indoors, the space opened into tatami mats and wooden sliding shoji doors. Natural daylight was plentiful, filtering through the cherry branches and wooden lattice windows to cast dappled shadows across the floorboards.
We explored numerous poses throughout the shoot. Sitting on the wooden deck with legs stretched out showed off the pairing of white socks and shoes; reclining sideways on the tatami accentuated the fluid drape of the fabrics; standing on the engawa veranda clutching the bunny and looking back over my shoulder let the long silver hair flutter in the breeze, which, framed by the cherry blossom branches, yielded an evocative atmosphere. The photographer excelled at seizing fleeting details of light and shadow, particularly when the sun gleamed across the white obi and silver hair, yielding fantastic surface texture.
We also invested plenty of thought into calibrating movements. To highlight the airy flutter of the silver hair, the photographer had me try turning around and walking, utilizing the natural breeze or a mini fan to preserve a clean arc in the strands. The kimono's wide sleeves required meticulous arrangement when sitting down, making sure they spread naturally without muffling the white inner dress, necessitating micro-adjustments for every pose. The crisp clacking of Mary Janes against the wooden floorboards brought an extra touch of realism to the set. The bunny's placement was equally deliberate—sometimes cradled to my chest, sometimes held casually by one hand, and sometimes resting beside me to weave varied storytelling into the compositions. Japanese-style garments demand rigorous posture; to keep the garment lines crisp, I consciously straightened my back while keeping my shoulders comfortably relaxed. Although walking around holding the hem and the plushie was slightly tiring, the final previews proved every bit was worth it. Kasugano Sora's persona resonates seamlessly with this kimono—cool and aloof, yet carrying a tender touch of cuteness. I hope everyone enjoys this interpretation.
