Past lives feel like unfamiliar shadows—never entirely clear, yet trailing closely behind. The inspiration for this shoot stemmed from the line, "I am no one's shadow." To capture this sense of contradiction, we decided to present it through varying interplay of light and shadow. The first shot against the chain background required strong composure; gloomy cold light fell across the face, combined with the heavy texture of the polearm weapon to convey a sense of stern independence. Moving to the classical Chinese-style study, the atmosphere softened; when holding the book and maple leaves, I tried my best to feel the weight of the props, keeping every movement deliberate and measured. The later sets of photos playing Go on the sofa were the part I was most immersed in. To match that relaxed vibe tinged with a languid scrutiny, I adjusted my seating posture to intentionally showcase leg lines; paired with the fitted trousers and hugging boots, this aloof, detached state carried far more tension than a rigid pose. My partner's synergy was also seamless—positioned left and right within the composition, whether leaning together holding swords or standing front and back, we strove to convey the interconnected ties of past and present lives between the characters. The costume and props achieved high fidelity to the original design—from the cyan-to-gold gradient on the dragon horns to the subtle jacquard embroidery on the fabric and the layered tiers of the white, red, and blue palette, everything holds up to close inspection. While focusing on the character's persona, the photographer's lighting beautifully highlighted the fabric's texture and the three-dimensional contours of the skin. We shot across dim light, warm light, and white studio backdrops, a process testing both patience and attention to detail. Every click of the shutter was truly a re-examination of the character's essence, and I hope this complex feeling of detachment and quiet depth is captured in the final photos.
