[Ruan Mei Cosplay] Graceful Traditional Style Moments from Honkai: Star Rail

Shooting this set for Ruan Mei cosplay was mainly about capturing that aloof yet somewhat casual aura of hers. Rather than just perfectly replicating the lore setting, I hoped to use cinematic camera language to materialize her composed demeanor. To give the frames a sense of breathability during the shoot, the original photos preserved the shoed state in the first shot, while taking off the shoes in subsequent ones to stand barefoot on the reflective floor released a light, airy elegance unique to a traditional aesthetic. In truth, shooting such a high-slit dress presents its greatest challenge in controlling body posture; a moment's inattention can make the outfit look cluttered in frame, so I habitually checked my costume placement with every shift in center of gravity.

Let's first talk about costume choices. This modified Chinese-style dress featuring blue-and-white color blocking demands extremely high precision in tailoring; the off-shoulder lotus leaf trim on the upper body is sewn with fine soft lace, which, paired with elbow-length gloves, naturally elongates smooth arm lines when raising hands to hold the fan. The three-dimensional white flowers and metallic edged ornaments on the garment serve as finishing touches, giving large solid color blocks visual anchor points without looking plain. Furthermore, the pink satin bow knot ornament at the neck, though small in appearance, effectively breaks up the coldness of the blue-and-white palette, introducing a touch of gentle tension into the styling.

Scene decoration recreated an interwoven feel of fantasy and traditional style. Dark wooden window frames in the background paired with translucent white gauze drapes inscribed with calligraphy cast intermingled blue and purple shadows under ambient lights. The pink cherry blossoms and crane model in the environment are not mere props, but serve to balance the overall composition's color scheme, giving even the dark background lively pops of color. The glossy black reflective floor was a pleasant surprise; it enabled symmetrical visual depth between the lower body and floor reflections during flat-lying shots. This reflective floor property also placed higher demands on light softness, as harsh white hot spots could otherwise easily form within the frame.

As for the caption note "Swipe left to unlock barefoot mode," it was actually a fun little concept during the shoot. In the first photo, I wore deep teal-green high heels paired with a white lace leg ring, preserving the complete styling while making lower legs look visually slender. Swapping to pure bare feet in the second photo not only highlighted the white ruffled ankle band ornament, but also lowered my overall center of gravity, naturally relaxing my posture alongside the round fan in hand. In actual final frames, wearing shoes versus bare feet corresponds to two distinctly different aura states: the former carries more dignified poise, while the latter leans closer to a lazy, relaxed ease.

Makeup for this styling didn't deliberately pursue heavy density, striving instead for natural translucency. Eye lashes were handled with relative density to enlarge the eyes, which, paired with the character's iconic teal-green hair tips, accentuated facial features under cool lighting. Various pose pairings were attempted during shooting, including sitting upright, kneeling on one knee holding the fan, and finally lounging flat comfortably. Throughout, close attention to skirt flow was necessary, as high slits easily risk exposure while walking, yet sweeping the skirt to one side shapes a clean, sleek leg contour. The flat-lying shot on the floor utilized mirror reflections to enrich the lower half of the frame, serving a balancing role in overall composition.

As a shoot with a very clear theme, I devoted substantial effort beforehand to confirming accessories. From white gloves on hands to lace ankle straps, down to the tasseled round fan in hand, every accessory served to visually balance color tones. The drapes of tassels and floral patterns on the fan surface formed clever echoes with background cherry blossoms and cranes. Prop placements were far from random, undergoing subtle adjustments guided by line-of-sight visual cues in every photo.

Every photoshoot brings new understanding of the character; particularly the process of fitting character settings through body language is far more complex than simply wearing the outfit. We shot four distinct spatial compositions this time, subtly tweaking light direction in every shot to capture both fabric texture and radiant skin clarity. Multi-colored light source combinations gave the room's atmosphere rich depth; during post-processing these color-tinted lights, I largely preserved the original ambient tone, applying meticulous brightening only to skin tones. Seeing these finished photos, I feel the imagery expression for Ruan Mei achieved a complete closed-loop presentation without any regrets.
