[Rei Ayanami cosplay] Neon Genesis Evangelion, First Try at Kendall-Style Convention Photos

It was my first time trying this edgy, Kendall-esque aesthetic at a convention, and for this Rei Ayanami cosplay, I chose the extremely challenging material of a latex suit.

Putting on and taking off this skin-tight suit was far more difficult than anticipated. Because the material is extremely body-hugging with zero elasticity margin, it required two people to help zip it up. Once on, movement was severely restricted and it was completely non-breathable; in the stuffy convention venue environment, I was drenched in sweat before shooting for very long. This experience was entirely different from ordinary, lightweight cosplay outfits. Although the process was exhausting, the uniquely crisp, reflective texture of the latex suit truly elevated the entire aura instantly.

During the shoot, the biggest challenge was controlling reflections. The dense ceiling lights in the convention hall hit the latex suit, creating large, glaring highlight spots. To prevent the entire outfit from looking like a flat reflector, the photographer had to constantly adjust angles and lighting positions. We tried several different poses. The first shot was from the front with both hands behind the head, a pose demanding flawless shoulder and neck lines. Because the latex suit is so tight, lifting the arms clearly reveals muscle flow and bone structure—any relaxation makes the posture look slouched. The second photo, hanging upside down on a ladder, was quite risky to execute; it required tremendous core strength to keep the legs and body lines straight, and the high heels around the ankles were difficult to control, but we persevered for the visual impact. The third profile glance-back shot was an essential angle to showcase full-body curves, with the body silhouette wrapped in the latex suit appearing exceptionally sharp.

For makeup and styling, to match the character's chilly demeanor, we kept a very clean base makeup, highlighting only the red pupils and red lips, aiming to downplay facial expressions so that the sci-fi feel of the latex suit became the visual focal point. In post-processing, the focus was on subduing the overly bright ceiling lights in the background and lifting shadow details, while ensuring smooth highlight transitions along the edges of the latex suit to prevent blending into the environment. The overall color palette strictly controlled saturation, leaning into a classic combination of black, gray, red, and cyan.

There were so many people on the convention day, and the ambient noise was loud. To capture the desired stern, detached expressions, I had to stay constantly focused and minimize outside distractions, which was physically and mentally draining. Although the journey was packed with difficulties and sweaty awkwardness, seeing the final images achieved through continuous pose and lighting adjustments made this bold attempt completely worth it. This attempt gave me valuable experience in pulling off such hardcore stylings, while giving me a deep appreciation for the importance of proper lighting and posing in latex suit photography.
