The concept behind this shoot stemmed from wanting to craft an airy, dreamcore visual experience during the sweltering summer. To give the composition a pure yet subtly fairytale-like quality, we dedicated substantial thought to staging. The entire studio floor was blanketed in artificial batting to simulate clouds, with sheer white curtains as the backdrop. Accented by pale blue ambient lights and holographic laser props, we constructed a space suspended between waking reality and dreams.
For wardrobe, I selected a white slip dress paired with sheer white lace detached sleeves featuring cutout straps. To enrich the look, I accented my hair with light blue holographic ribbon bows. Makeup focused heavily on the eyes and blush, featuring dark-toned contacts and a few faux beauty marks beneath the eyes to add character recognition, paired with a dewy peach lip glaze to convey a lively, innocent maidenly charm on camera.
Origami Paper crane figures in diverse shades filled the set, with cyan-blue serving as the keynote, punctuated by accents of bright yellow, orange, and red. Interacting with these paper cranes was the shoot's core focus: often I reclined across the cotton-draped mat, letting my hair fan out organically. The photographer adopted overhead angles, using a wide aperture to blur the colorful foreground paper cranes into tiered visual depth. The actions remained effortless—holding a crane softly before my eyes or turning slightly to look into the distance. To enrich the chiaroscuro layering, we also brought in a disco ball whose scattered reflections danced across the white fabric and skin, lending luminous depth to otherwise flat frames.
Posing while lying or seated on the floor was truly a test of core strength; resting upon soft cotton requires keeping the neck and shoulders relaxed without slouching, demanding a subtle whole-body engagement. Directing the gaze was equally essential—alternating between direct lens contact to build intimacy, and simply gazing down at a crane in hand to create a quiet, insular reverie. For such a Dreamy portrait aesthetic, lighting is paramount. I recommend avoiding direct harsh lights in favor of diffused natural bounce light from windows to capture soft, supple skin textures.
Looking back on the session, finding such a cool, tranquil visual oasis in midsummer was truly precious. Though the cotton floor made the set a bit warm, seeing the holographic ribbons sparkle with kaleidoscopic rainbow flares alongside colorful paper cranes blurred in the light made every effort worthwhile. This was not only a stylized Dreamy portrait, but also a process of giving form to the childhood innocence of folding cranes to make a wish—immortalizing that pure maidenly spirit through the lens made it deeply meaningful.
