This time, I cosplayed Ruan Mei's Ancient style cosplay look from Honkai: Star Rail. When I first got this outfit, my immediate impression was how incredibly rich the details were. From the translucent emerald gemstone at the neckline to the dimensional white floral appliqués and gold cutout ornaments on the skirt hem, every part required meticulous wearing and adjustment. To ensure the best visual effect, the layers of the wig were trimmed multiple times; the white lace hair accessory and blue ribbon on the crown also required numerous bobby pins to keep them secure and tidy during pose transitions. For makeup, the focus was placed on delineating the eyes. To complement the bright blue contact lenses, eyeshadow in clear, cool tones was used, paired with a low-saturation pale pink lip color, aiming to convey a serene, detached, and aloof temperament.
The location chosen was a real-scene studio featuring wooden doors, windows, and antique tiled eaves. The background was decorated with cascading wisteria and white blossom branches, with a soft white fleece blanket beneath me, making the overall tone soft and pristine. The bamboo folding fan in my hand, adorned with a green tassel at the base, resonated nicely in color with the emerald on my chest. The blue ruan (lute) beside me served as another excellent complementary prop; though not actually played, nailing the posture was essential to make it look natural.
Since this costume features an off-the-shoulder design and puffy ruffled lace cuffs, it placed high demands on showcasing the lines of the neck and shoulders. After putting on the long white gloves, handling the fan had to be as gentle and slow as possible to avoid looking stiff. The teal-green mini skirt was paired with white garter stockings (Stockings), and the pearl thigh ring was a major highlight of this ensemble, beautifully flattering the leg lines while seated. To achieve satisfying shots, I experimented with various sitting postures, constantly shifting my center of gravity while paying close attention to the placement and angle of my legs—highlighting curves without appearing forced.
A lot of thought went into the studio lighting setup: we used a key light from one side paired with a darker background tone to make the subject pop. However, the fabric of the blue skirt reflected slightly under strong light, so continuous communication with the photographer was necessary to tweak angles and prevent localized overexposure. The fan's tassel and the skirt's lace easily tangled whenever moving or adjusting poses, so before every shutter click, time had to be taken to smooth out these minor details.
The entire shoot lasted quite a while; beyond wearing weighted accessories, maintaining steady poise and emotional control before the camera was challenging. Regarding movement, I kept my gaze gentle yet detached, avoiding large hand gestures to embody a poised, serene beauty. Although the preparation and shoot were intricate, seeing the subtle damask patterns of the skirt and the luster of the pearls captured so beautifully made every bit of tedious work worthwhile.
