Getting straight to the point, this Tingyun cosplay photoshoot set from Honkai: Star Rail is finally complete. Because I've always loved the aesthetic collision of China-chic and traditional Chinese style with sci-fi in the Xianzhou setting, I didn't opt for a traditional, straightforward studio mode for styling and set design. Instead, I aimed to create a languid and cunning Foxian atmosphere unique to Tingyun herself.
First, regarding hair and makeup. This time I wore a wig with red and black highlights, which is a key iconic feature of Tingyun's character. To complement her demeanor, red tones were accentuated in the eye makeup, paired with clear, translucent base makeup to capture her tactful, smooth-talking, yet slightly mysterious aura. The fox ears on my head were manually adjusted; to make them look more natural, I carefully aligned them with the wig's hairline during wearing so they wouldn't stand out awkwardly.
Costume details were the absolute top priority of this shoot. The dark brown halter top on the upper body carries great texture, with double bows in white and red at the collar providing visual layering. But the most eye-catching part of the entire look is definitely the huge golden cloud-pattern ornament at the waist, which, together with two long hanging white tassels, instantly maxes out the Xianzhou splendor and classical elegance. For the lower half, black lace-trimmed shorts were paired with voluminous white sleeve covers; this overall color combination of red, black, white, and gold stood out brilliantly on camera. Furthermore, I was very satisfied with the posability and fluffiness of the tail in this beast girl outfit, which naturally rested on the ground during various poses.
Now onto the set and props. To create a scene resembling "Tingyun's desk," we brought in a woven bamboo scroll storage basket filled with white-and-wood scrolls. There were also a small abacus, a celadon teapot, a large gold ingot, and wooden lanterns. The large gold ingot in particular reflected a soft, warm sheen under warm lighting, forming a material contrast with the white fox fur mat nearby. A large expanse of red satin cloth was used as the dominant scene color; because red possesses strong visual tension, combined with warm yellow lighting, the overall frame naturally took on a languid boudoir atmosphere and a hint of luxurious sweetness.
Regarding shooting angles, I mainly selected reclining poses to complement the softness of the fur mat. The pearl strand and scroll in hand served as great interactive props. I tried to align my eyes with the character; that line of "Benefactor, long time no see~" is actually hidden within these micro-expressions and reclining postures. In this stretched posture, the golden waist ornament did not look heavy at all, but rather became a highlight of the frame by softly reflecting light. At the same time, this reclining pose naturally exposed leg lines, which, combined with the trim of the black shorts, carried a touch of sensuality while staying well within the boundary of the character's disposition.
For color grading, we unified the tones with warm processing, avoiding artificially high brightness or extreme clarity. Instead, we intentionally darkened the ambient light, allowing the key light source to land precisely on the character's face and gold ornaments. Especially in the final wide-angle shot, scattered pearls, the fox tail on the ground, and the scroll holder were all captured within the composition, forming rich visual layers. Polishing the costume, makeup, props, and lighting deepened my understanding of Tingyun as a character—she shouldn't be merely cool or purely alluring; her underlying trait is that calm composure of holding everything in the palm of her hand.
This shoot was not just about recreating a character, but about expressing a specific aura. I hope this cosplay photoshoot set presents the Tingyun in my heart—leisurely clicking her abacus and teasing her benefactor aboard the Xianzhou.
