Wishing upon a shooting star for a tomorrow free of sadness, choosing to record this set of photos as Wang Dong is primarily to align with the character's trait of being tsundere on the outside yet pure on the inside. Before the official shoot, I made a lot of considerations regarding the fidelity of the overall look, including the wig's gradient handling, outfit coordination, and the presentation of butterfly elements.
The wig used this time is a blue and pink gradient wig. To present that fluffy and layered visual from the original setting, I spent quite a lot of time styling and adjusting it before the shoot, adding some fine glitter to increase the dreamlike effect. For makeup, I chose a cool eye makeup look that echoes the blue colored contacts, hoping to express the character's unique sense of youth and a touch of sharp gaze. Regarding clothing, I chose a white short jacket and a black inner top, paired with a matching belt. Actually, this minimalist black and white color palette conversely highlights the visual center of gravity for the blue and pink gradient wig and blue butterfly cosplay elements, making the overall styling clean and sharp without looking cluttered in color.
In terms of props, besides the blue butterfly in my hand, I specially pinned a larger blue butterfly decoration on the jacket, which conceptually emphasized the character's attributes even further. During the shoot, a cool blue atmospheric lighting was paired; this cool-toned light just happened to match the character's overall outfit and hair color, further highlighting the coldness and loneliness carried by the phrase "wishing upon a shooting star," while simultaneously not losing that burning fighting spirit in the character's heart. Regarding the choice of poses, I shot two sets with different vibes: one is quietly supporting a butterfly with fingertips, overall expressing a serene sense of melancholy; while the other made a thumbs-down gesture, restoring that core stubbornness and unyielding nature in the character's bones. I feel this is also one of the highly distinct personality labels of the character Wang Dong.
Actually, every time I do this kind of dress-up, the hardest part to grasp is not how exquisite the clothing is, but how to achieve both physical and spiritual likeness in demeanor. Styling and costumes can only bring the audience a first-glance intuitive impression, but the character's gaze and posture are what truly immerse people. Although it was a bit tiring during today's shoot, with the cooperation of the lights, entering the character's emotional state offered an exceptionally unique experience of immersion. No matter the perspective, I hope to maintain that pure nature and persistent spirit of Wang Dong. Although a shooting star might not actually fall to help us realize all our wishes in reality, being able to convey this expectation and persistence for a better tomorrow in photos is meaningful in itself for this Soul Land cosplay project.
While sorting out this set of photos, I was also observing the presentation of every detail in the frame—from the reflection of the wig hit by the light, to the texture of the collar zipper, and to the folds of the white jacket—every spot allows me to recall the state during the shoot. As an attempt prepared with dedication, this set of photos achieves a clean and highly recognizable visual style. I hope this set of dress-up photos with a touch of cool-toned light and shadow style can pass down that corresponding atmospheric vibe to those who see it, counting as my sincere interpretation of this look and character.
