[Dongfang Ai Cosplay] Tales of Romance: Duo Interaction Photoshoot with Hephaestus

Shot outdoors a year ago, I’ve finally gathered the finished set of these official Tales of Romance photos featuring Dongfang Ai cosplay and Hephaestus cosplay. My motivation back then was straightforward: I wanted to present a character relationship I personally love deeply through my own interpretation. Shooting this set with a close friend fulfilled a long-held dream of ours to collaborate.

We poured extensive preparation into the costumes and props for this photoshoot. On my end as Dongfang Ai, silver-grey short hair was paired with a cross accent near the corner of the eye. The costume featured a black jacquard blazer over a white ruffled bowtie shirt, complemented by a purplish-red pleated miniskirt. To match the character's aura, I styled the outfit with black thigh-high socks and a leather leg garter adorned with metal studs, creating an aesthetic rooted in an academic style uniform with a modified uniform edge. White gloves and platform boots elevated the texture of the uniform ensemble. For Hephaestus, purple hair was styled with a green headband, matching the black blazer but paired with a deep blue pleated maxi skirt and a green frog-element accessory at the collar. Both of our cuffs were accented with silver-white stripe trim. Standing together, our cool color palette of black, purple, and blue established a remarkably harmonious visual resonance against the outdoor greenery.

Looking back at the makeup and styling from a year ago, I can certainly spot many shortcomings. The frizziness of the wig, the trim of the bangs, the cleanliness of the makeup, and the crispness of the garment pressed lines all fall short compared to my current standards. Yet, this set stands as a meaningful archive of a specific phase in my cosplay journey—preserving a piece of work that, while imperfect, was created with immense dedication and heart.

The location was an outdoor lawn near a convention venue. As afternoon sunlight filtered through the leaves, our photographer used a wide aperture lens to craft strong bokeh effects, blurring the background of purple blooms and foliage into soft light and shadow, infusing the entire frame with a tranquil radiance. We put considerable thought into staging the poses. In photos 1 and 2, where we sit back-to-back on the grass, we adjusted our center of gravity so both of us could remain fully relaxed, conveying a natural mutual understanding between partners. Photo 3 features a standing hand-in-hand posture meant to evoke a sense of supportive connection. For photo 4, where I kneel on one knee from a low angle looking up, I adjusted my head angle repeatedly to find a body language that comfortably caught her reaching hand without looking stiff.

Finally, for photo 5, we arranged a pose where she sits while I kneel on one knee, both of us gripping a custom black long cane. We meticulously adjusted our spatial positioning and body tilt for this shot. The composition of photo 5 beautifully showcases the details of the thigh-high socks and leg garters, while the wide aperture bokeh pulls the main subjects sharply into focus. Resting our center of gravity on the lawn and cane allowed natural light to cast crisp rim highlights along our costumes and props.

Organizing a full day of convention outdoor photography with a friend is no easy feat; before the shoot, we spent over half a month coordinating costume tailoring, accessories, and props. We searched far and wide for the black cane to ensure it matched the setting perfectly. Although there were clear shortcomings in wig precision and post-processing from a year ago, the process of meticulously checking every detail on set remains the most rewarding part of doing cosplay. Bringing these photos out now as a nostalgic archive feels like giving a proper nod of respect to my past self.
