This ancient-style set was shot at Huqiu with a very distinct theme: the quirky, mischievous 'little junior sister,' infused with Lin Miaomiao's spunky persona. Because it conceptually cloaks a contemporary character in ancient-style aesthetics, I deliberately eschewed the solemn, demure postures typical of Traditional style Hanfu in favor of more modern, lively micro-gestures.
For the styling, I chose an ensemble featuring green-and-white gradient Hanfu elements. The top paired white sheer gauze with delicate floral embroidery, offering airy breathability and beautiful light refraction; the skirt was a lush green pleated piece dotted with golden blossoms at the waist, undulating in fluid waves as I walked through the grove. The hair was arranged into double topknots accented with small yellow blooms and trailing ribbons—simple, youthful, and full of girlish vibe.
The prop department prepared a generous variety, including a longsword, several painted yellow talisman papers, and a round silk fan. Capturing the sword-wielding shot (Image 1) proved unexpectedly challenging; the sword was heavier than anticipated, requiring coordinated skirt motion to convey weightless agility. For the talisman series (Image 4), freezing the papers floating mid-air meant fine-tuning wind directions repeatedly while practicing incantation hand seals—a process that heavily tested micro-expression control, as focus could slip in an instant.
A special mention goes to the poses biting a blade of grass or folding arms with sassy confidence (Images 2 and 5). These poses test facial contours and gaze: tilting the head, giving a playful pout, and raising an eyebrow swiftly communicated that tsundere, sharp-witted spark. Holding the round fan before the chest or leaning against bamboo stems utilized wide apertures to softly blur the backdrop, using foreground bamboo silhouettes as organic frame lines to accentuate the eyes.
The natural illumination on shoot day was superb, with dappled sunlight filtering through the canopy to create localized rim light and radiant flares. Post-processing preserved these light-and-dark contrasts while harmonizing the palette in verdant greens and warm golden tones, amplifying the vibrant Girlish vibe. This Bamboo forest photoshoot served as a wonderful foray into Hanfu styling, capturing a playful dimension entirely distinct from my daily look.
