[Reimu Hakurei Cosplay] Touhou Project's red and white miko, stealing half a day of leisure in the bamboo forest

Today's set of photos was shot in a very dense bamboo forest. Before leaving home, I carefully checked Reimu's outfit; the red pleats on the skirt and the lace on the sleeves are quite fragile, and even a slight brush against tree branches could cause snagging. To fit the setting of Reimu Hakurei from Touhou Project, I chose this skirt with a large area of prints and red lace edging, paired with white over-the-knee socks and platform shoes. Although the overall styling is very faithful to the source, walking on the gravel ground in them is actually quite tough, especially when the platform shoes get stuck in the gaps between stones, requiring me to keep my balance the whole time.
The shooting location was chosen in a bamboo forest featuring a wooden cabin. The space under the cabin's veranda is relatively narrow, so to be able to sit completely on the edge without looking cramped, I tried several angles. The photographer used an ultra-wide-angle lens; I was initially worried it would distort the person, but the resulting perspective effect was unexpectedly good, capturing both the depth of the bamboo forest and the structure of the wooden cabin. The first photo used a low-angle shot, perfectly incorporating the wall lamp under the eaves and the dazzling sunlight overhead into the frame. The starburst of the sun was very beautiful, but I had to control my facial expressions well, avoiding squinting due to the backlight or strong light, while still maintaining Reimu's aloof and detached feeling.
To be honest, shooting outdoors in summer is a test for both physical stamina and makeup. White stockings easily pick up dust and fallen leaves outdoors, and every time I sat down and stood up, I needed to carefully tidy them up. Sunlight filtering through the bamboo leaves creates mottled shadows; this natural dappled light is rare, but it also easily leaves uneven shadows on the face. We could only wait for the sun to shift slightly, taking rapid bursts of shutter clicks during the gaps of even lighting. Mosquitoes and bugs in the bamboo forest are also a major challenge of field shooting, and even with bug spray, getting bitten is inevitable. To keep the frame clean, we also had to avoid some messy dead branches and gravel on the ground.
Throughout the shooting process, I didn't design too many large-amplitude actions, mainly sitting on the veranda with legs naturally extended in a static posture, because Reimu herself is a rather casual, somewhat lazy yet immensely powerful miko. I tried to convey this personality through the direction of my gaze and a relaxed sitting posture. Fans of Touhou Project are very familiar with Reimu's image, so details cannot be sloppy. For example, the large red bow on the back was adjusted several times before the shoot to ensure it could prop up the silhouette of the entire styling from different angles.
The lenses used this time were mainly large-aperture prime and wide-angle lenses; the large aperture was used to blur the background and highlight the subject, while the wide-angle was used to account for the overall environment. While sitting under the wooden cabin's veranda, the tactile feel of the wooden floorboards combined with the surrounding bamboo forest created a deeply immersive overall atmosphere. The details of this outfit, such as the lace at the neckline and the cascading layers of the skirt, could all show a three-dimensional texture under side-backlighting. Post-processing retouching also retained the original verdant tone of the bamboo forest without excessive color grading, keeping the skin texture and light-and-shadow transitions natural. The lush green of the bamboo forest formed a wonderful contrast with the dark base of the clothing, and the red skirt also played a brilliant finishing touch in the frame.
Looking through the entire set of pictures, my personal favorite is the first vertical composition, which is not only compact in composition but also wonderfully showcases the leg lines and the characteristics of the clothing. Through this shoot, I also gained a better understanding of the importance of finding a light-and-shadow balance in a natural environment, no longer relying purely on artificial fill light, but instead adapting to the changes in ambient light. By the end of the shoot, the sky had already darkened, and the gradient of light and shadow gave this shoot more layers. Every time I go for an outdoor cosplay shoot, it's a brand-new experience—not just restoring the character, but also finding the connection point between the character and reality within a natural environment. I hope the finished photos allow friends who love Touhou Project and Reimu to feel the charm of the character.
