Bringing together this He Meng Miao Jie cosplay shoot took about half a month from preparation to call-time. The Ming Cult in JX3 Online has always been a sect for which I hold deep nostalgia, and I finally got my hands on this He Meng uniform. The moment the costume arrived, I carefully cross-checked it against the official character art, and the details were reproduced quite accurately. To present my best state, I started managing my diet and posture days in advance—after all, this outfit is quite revealing, placing definite demands on figure and form.

For the makeup, to capture that Western Regions aesthetic inherent to the Ming Cult, I specifically deepened facial contouring, selected golden-brown tones for eyeshadow, and wore a rich, highly saturated crimson lipstick. The wig was a custom-made long straight black style with two hair buns sculpted on top, complemented by golden headdresses and trailing white veils that instantly transformed my presence. The outfit itself has an intricate structure: color-blocked in white, red, and brown, paired with abundant metallic ornaments. Putting it on required tying straps and securing buckles layer by layer; the golden ornaments along the arms in particular had to be cinched very snugly to prevent them from slipping during movements. Because there were numerous metal pieces, ongoing adjustments were necessary during shooting to prevent awkward glare or tilting.

The set was prepared with immense care, draped in Bohemian totem fabrics and fur blankets, backed by palm leaves and orange flowers. To craft that enigmatic foreign ambiance, the gaffer positioned a green light on the left while washing the right side and background in warm orange light—this warm-and-cool contrast elevated the texture of the frame to the max. Such lighting places high demands on costume textiles; fortunately, the silken sheen and metallic luster of this attire rendered gorgeously under the interplay of cool and warm light.

The greatest challenge was actually being with a black cat for our interactive frames. The cat was adorable, but truly uncontrollable. At first, we tried getting it to nestle quietly in my arms, but it kept trying to swat at the gold chains on my costume. Eventually, we had to follow its mood, coaxing it with treats while snapping candid shots. Those natural interactive moments captured between human and cat in the final images were actually selected from dozens of outtakes. To keep the cat in frame, I had to freeze in one posture for extended periods; though exhausting, the final results made it totally worthwhile. Whenever the kitty dashed off, we had to pause to reset the lighting and adjust emotions, which tested our patience immensely.

The pair of dual blades in hand were sourced myself to coordinate with this cosplay. Holding them securely required wrist strength, which felt incredible during turns and slashing motions when synchronized with the garment's flowing ribbons. Several candid shots caught the fabric billowing in the wind alongside the wielded dual blades, perfectly channeling the fierce grit of martial artists. When shooting action poses, the high-slit design of the skirt proved very convenient, letting leg lines extend smoothly without feeling constricted whether reclining or leaping.

This shoot took nearly a full day, running from afternoon well into the night. We even ran into an issue mid-shoot where metallic ornaments came loose; thankfully, I brought a hot glue gun to make quick on-site repairs and finish smoothly. To capture different atmospheric angles, beyond standard standing and sitting postures, we designed reclining and airborne dynamic motions, making full use of the fur rugs and patterned tapestries to enrich visual layering. Post-production color grading also involved much thought, preserving dark ambient tones while brightening skin tones and metallic highlights for stronger visual impact. I am personally very satisfied with the outcome—both the lavishness of the scene and the character's mystery were fully realized, and I hope everyone enjoys this Ming Cult cosplay captured beneath dark-toned light and shadow.
