[Minami Kotori Cosplay] μ's Shi Xueniao: Recreating the Daily Life of a Sweet Idol

Regarding this Shi Xueniao outfit for Minami Kotori, there were quite a few twists and turns from preparation to finally wearing it. The signature asymmetric design in the original setting heavily tests one's ability to capture the right shape, especially the ruffles on the neckline and the blue-and-white striped bow. To recreate it properly this time, I chose a cotton-like crisp fabric, making the layers much more pronounced under studio lighting.

The wig was also a key focus: light golden medium-long curls paired with straight bangs, along with the huge metal ring on the side of the head and the lace flower hair accessory intertwined with blue and white ribbons. The focal point of the whole look naturally rested on the top of the head and the collar area.

During shooting, I chose a corner at home with a white plush carpet to take mirror selfies. This allowed me to display both standing and sitting poses effectively. Since the Shi Xueniao outfit itself is slim-fitting and lightweight, it doesn't look bulky. In particular, the asymmetric leg warmer/sock design on the lower body—a thick blue-and-white stripe on the left and a pure white thigh-high sock on the right, paired with a short, fluffy lake-blue pleated skirt—is extremely effective at visually lengthening body proportions. To fit the character's theme, I also placed a small white bird charm in the shot, feeling that this detail brought it closer to the original concept and avoided feeling OOC (out of character).

As for makeup, to achieve that lively look of an idol on stage, I specially used a dewy base makeup and peach-toned blush. For eyeshadow, I weakened the colors to emphasize contours, and added golden-brown contact lenses to complement the blonde hair. I took a few close-ups this time as well, which clearly show the metal accessory details on the hairpiece and bowtie.

Although it took a lot of effort to adjust everything while wearing this outfit for photos, seeing the finished result made all those complex adjustments beforehand feel completely worth it. For me, doing cosplay for any μ's character is always a process of understanding garment construction from scratch. Because 2D outfits often have many physics-defying structures in their graphic designs, making them drape naturally in real life required a lot of effort on the garment patterns. Fortunately, the final look turned out quite consistent with my understanding of Minami Kotori.

Indoor shooting also took creating an atmospheric vibe into consideration. The beige curtains in the back and the green-and-white air conditioner cover acted as background color blocks, echoing the blue, white, and yellow colors of the outfit, creating a refreshing and bright overall tone. The overhead lighting was appropriately softened so that the tension in facial muscles was less noticeable, making it look more like performing on stage rather than rushing around exhaustedly.

Although doing Kotori is really hard, especially with those seemingly simple yet peculiar accessories that are hard to position, I am quite a persistent person and hoped to show as much of this character's natural vivacity and approachable charm as possible. Looking at myself in the mirror, I felt like the character stepping out of the 2D world had truly manifested in 3D for a moment. In the end, I just wanted to use such an exquisite outfit as an Anime gear build record to capture my growth and journey during this period.
