Transforming into Misaki Ayuzawa from Maid Sama!, I've finally brought this Maid outfit project to life. Although the black-and-white classic styling differs slightly from her iconic red-and-white large apron in the original work, putting it on immediately brought back Misaki's sharp and slightly tsundere spirit. That is probably the charm of the character itself—no matter how the specific colors are tweaked, as long as you have this hairstyle and a familiar, effortless look in your eyes, the character's soul comes alive. That's why I say this was a sincere attempt, and I completely enjoyed every bit of it.
Because I have always admired the contrasting charm of the awesome student council president having to maintain dignity in a former all-boys school while secretly juggling a job at a maid cafe, I emphasized an unflustered service spirit during the shoot. Holding the tray with one hand, maintaining a steady center of gravity and a naturally confident gaze, it felt as though I could deliver desserts precisely to a guest the very next second. Stepping onto the white cylindrical platform, the studio's clean lighting brought out wonderful light and shadow textures; with no redundant scenery to distract, all eyes naturally fell on the character's expression and outfit details.
Holding a small cake topped with strawberries and cream, maintaining that lively sense of balance actually required considerable core strength, especially when coordinating footwork—slightly tiptoeing with the back leg lifted to create a seamless dynamic posture. Frozen moments like the ones in the photos often take many attempts to capture the most satisfying instant. The angle of the elbows, the extension of the fingers, and the slight tilt of the chin were all repeatedly adjusted in front of the mirror. Although the process tested my stamina, seeing that naturally relaxed state in the final shots made all the hard work worthwhile.
Regarding makeup and hair, the dark brown long hair was specifically trimmed to retain its iconic voluminous layers and face-framing bangs, making facial features softer and more prominent. The black-and-white Maid outfit utilized structured fabric with finely pleated aprons, and the off-the-shoulder cut fitted the character's capable yet not overly sweet setting. Black thick-soled knee-high boots visually elongated the leg lines while retaining her sense of strength; compared to airy thigh-high socks, this combination grounded the overall look much more firmly on the floor.
There were actually many fun moments during the shoot. For example, the photo where I stood holding an empty tray with hands on my hips looked very much like a president exuding a "you commoners" aura. Then, in the second photo holding the cake, I wanted to show the gentleness and delicacy of a maid—switching states on the fly really felt like experiencing a dual identity. To give static photos more vitality, I silently recited the character's classic lines in my head, imagining myself standing inside the maid cafe in front of a table of eager customers.
For lighting in this shoot, large softboxes were used because the Maid outfit contained a lot of white sections, where harsh light could easily cause overexposure and lose detail. Soft light clearly highlighted the color contrast at the bow collar and the black-and-white borders while avoiding shiny highlights on skin. The shadows were very soft, making facial contours look exceptionally three-dimensional without appearing harsh, keeping skin texture clean and translucent.
Having stepped into the world of Anime-style photography for several years, completing each work feels like a dialogue between a fan and a character across dimensions. Attempting to preserve the atmosphere of youth, subtle tsundere charm, and sense of justice belonging to Maid Sama! this time fulfilled a milestone wish. Whether a piece of work is good or bad, I believe it's a natural expression of my state of mind at that moment; keeping love for the original work and taking every shutter click seriously yields the most genuine joy.
