The photoshoot process for this Xiao Qiao: Manga Sorceress cosplay from Honor of Kings was filled with challenges. First, when preparing the costume to recreate that Purple magic world atmosphere, I searched for fabrics in various textures. In particular, the shimmering starry patterns on the skirt hem required just the right reflective quality, otherwise they would easily look flat or overly dark during the studio shoot.
The wig styling was equally meticulous, with the blue gradient transition being especially critical. To craft that rounded bun on top, extensive time was spent securing the hair strands while keeping the side sections voluminous yet tidy. For makeup, pink-purple eyeshadow and eyeliner were chosen with slightly winged outer corners, echoing the overall color palette and fitting the aesthetic of a magical character.
The most distinctive element is undoubtedly the long magic wand. Shaped somewhat like a little monster, this prop features a delightfully playful expression, with red discs on the sides of its face and green feet at the base adding whimsical charm. Although quite heavy to hold, it added substantial presence to the entire ensemble. During test lighting in the studio before the shoot, preventing the green on the wand from clashing with the violet-blue of the costume was a key challenge; fortunately, using a brighter purple ambient backlight blended the two harmoniously.
In terms of composition and posing, the first photo seated on a cube with legs crossed and the wand held diagonally was repeatedly adjusted on set by the photographer and me. This approach was designed to elongate leg lines, increase visual dynamism, and form an energetic diagonal line between the wand and body without looking stiff, accentuating the off-the-shoulder design and the tailored fit of the mini skirt. The second photo holding the hat presents a complete showcase of the look, as the gradient hues of that oversized witch hat stood out gorgeously on camera.
During post-processing, excessive skin-smoothing was avoided; instead, a consistent cool-toned filter was applied to accentuate the depth of the purple tones, making the frame look like an enchanting Purple magic dreamscape. This aligned seamlessly with our intended theme of a Purple magic world.
As the cosplayer portraying this character, fully restoring this attire was my ultimate objective in this Xiao Qiao Cosplay. The garment's tailoring fit comfortably without restricting movement. Even though shooting all day left my prop-holding arm and posing legs rather sore, seeing the final images made it completely worthwhile, leaving me very satisfied with the experience and visual results.
