[Asuka Cosplay] Neon Genesis Evangelion: Convention makeup test Record

The main focus of this makeup test was recreating the character's eye shape and facial proportions. First was adjusting the eye shape: because an Anime girl's eyes differ greatly from real humans, I enlarged the pupils with contact lenses and deepened the eyelid crease with eyeliner, making the overall eyes appear larger and rounder. Elongating the outer corners slightly paired with upturned eyeshadow enhanced the character's sharp edge. The blush was also tailored to her personality, applied beneath the eyes and over the cheekbones to add dimension to the face. The trickiest part of the makeup test was the reddish blush under the eyes. This iconic makeup effect must look translucent, so I set the under-eye area with loose powder three times, brushed a reddish blush along the lower orbital rim, and layered a touch of highlighter, creating an adorable, subtly flushed look when tilting the head down. To achieve this bone structure, I put considerable effort into contouring: keeping the bridge shading soft to make the nose appear straight, while highlighting the tip slightly to form a youthful, rounded button nose. The lip shape was also altered by first concealing natural lip lines with foundation and redrawing a slightly pouted contour.

The wig was another major highlight of this Convention makeup test. The orange twintails not only required layered trimming, but also hairspray to sculpt and hold their shape. The tips had to maintain a natural slight curl to look lively and energetic. The bangs were parted in the middle with long side bangs veiling the line of sight beside one eye, allowing the gaze to be concealed when looking down—capturing that distinct character temperament. Adding the red-and-black neural interface headset atop the head immediately gave the silhouette three-dimensional depth. Securing the twintails was quite physically demanding, requiring internal support within the wig before tying the pigtails tightly so they wouldn't sag, ultimately achieving that floating, voluminous look in the photos. Applying false eyelashes was equally crucial; to achieve the distinct, defined lash effect typical of an Anime girl, I placed half-strip lashes at the outer corners and brushed them out into a fan shape. To fit the character design, I also applied an eye-enlarging lower lid technique, reducing the perceived eye spacing and intensifying that direct, engaging gaze.

Taking mirror selfies while adjusting angles made the process more tiring than expected, but seeing the results draw ever closer to the design brought immense satisfaction. Cosplaying my ultimate favorite and bringing her to life is truly rewarding. Since this is still the test phase, parts of the wig will need professional refinement before reaching photoshoot standards. For the outfit, I chose the classic white shirt and red bow tie; simple basics demand the best condition and test whether the makeup holds up. The plushie in hand is a chibi version of the character, serving as an interactive prop to ease initial camera awkwardness. Details like the bow tie and loose threads need careful checking, as details make the shoot. This marks the beginning of cosplaying my Neon Genesis Evangelion main character; I'll continue refining highlighters and contouring, especially along the jawline, to match the original design from both front and profile views. Makeup tests reveal flaws best, and after tweaking for half a day, I finally found the right angles. When official photoshoot lighting is set up, it should fully bring out the character's dynamic presence. Patience is essential throughout the test—from styling the wig to layering makeup—it tests technique, but to deliver the ultimate visual presentation, it's all completely worth it.
