[Rei Ayanami cosplay] That Rooftop Moment in Neon Genesis Evangelion

This outdoor shoot for Rei Ayanami from Neon Genesis Evangelion was quite a fun challenge. The location chosen was a rooftop photoshoot on an elevated roof. To capture that cool, ethereal atmosphere, the photographer specifically used side backlighting and high exposure, creating a soft halo along the subject's edges. Because it was quite windy that day, the blue short wig easily blew out of shape, so a lot of time was spent reapplying hairspray to keep that doll-like hair texture from the anime.

In terms of the outfit, the white shirt, blue sailor skirt, and red ribbon tie are the core elements for recreation accuracy. The white collar and sleeves needed to be ironed perfectly flat, as any wrinkles would greatly undermine the visual quality. For the lower body, it was paired with black stockings and white sneakers. In terms of full-body composition, the black stockings nicely elongated the leg proportions, which is something I'm very satisfied with in this set of photos.

Regarding the poses that people often focus on, such as the shot of sitting on the rooftop edge (the cover photo), I was actually a bit nervous and needed some mental preparation. Sitting there with my toes dangling in the air, the photographer shot from a low angle below to fully showcase the leg lines and the tailoring of the skirt. Throughout the process, we constantly fine-tuned the angle to ensure the subject remained near the center of the frame without getting clipped at the edges.

For post-processing, we didn't pile on excessive heavy filters, primarily sticking to a cool grey-blue tone and slightly desaturating the colors. Since the red ribbon tie and red eye makeup already served as striking color accents, applying heavier filters would have broken that delicate, aloof vibe. This shoot went quite smoothly, giving me a deeper grasp of clean, minimalist makeup and new insights into the styling logic of cosplay.

Lastly, when portraying this cool, detached style of character, a sense of blank space in facial expression is crucial. There's no need to force a smile or make exaggerated expressions; that emotionless gaze or a momentary blank stare looking slightly down is actually closest to the character's soul. The coordination of lighting and angles this time was a fairly professional endeavor, and I hope to capture more photos with this sense of depth and atmosphere in the future.
