[Takanashi Rikka cosplay] Those Chunibyo Moments at a Late-Night Street Corner of Guangzhou CP Exhibition

This batch of night convention photos from the Guangzhou CP Exhibition is finally retouched, and I'm sharing them with everyone immediately. This time, I cosplayed Takanashi Rikka. Considering the character's whimsical and slightly chunibyo everyday feel from the original work, combined with the street environment around the exhibition, I felt that this outdoor night shoot fits the character's vibe much better than a pure studio shoot.

Let's first talk about the costume and props this time. The sailor suit was custom-made by a tailor according to the iconic blue-collar white-base pattern. The red saturation of the bow tie was adjusted to be relatively high so that it provides a great color pop under the dim blue tones of the night scene, preventing the entire frame from being muffled in the shadows. The skirt is in a pleated style; to match the character's sense of height, the hemline wasn't made too long, allowing the whole person to look more vibrant in front of the camera.

The most core piece of equipment is, of course, that red school bag. The bag was specially custom-made, avoiding the completely stiff styles found on the market because Rikka frequently has movements like running with the bag, swinging it up, or holding it against her chest. If the material were too hard, it would look exceptionally rigid when folding and posing. In addition, the white bandages on the knees and wrists were given a slightly wrinkled texture in the details. Combined with the subtle fill light in this photo and the large-aperture bokeh circles in the background, it creates a highly meticulous visual layer.

Regarding the freezing of these three actions. In the first photo, pointing a finger toward the front of the lens actually recreates that interactive feel from the animation when she says "Behold the Tyrant's Eye!" or when she is exploring some "Unseen Horizon". This kind of action that breaks the fourth wall to reach outward tests the photographer's control over foreground/background blurring and the subject's facial exposure quite heavily during night shoots. The friend responsible for the shoot used a large-aperture lens, turning the garden path in the background and the distant streetlights into very beautiful bokeh circles, not deliberately hiding the environment but rather making the environment a part of the character.

The second photo is that classic pose of pressing one hand against the forehead, which usually appears when she lifts her bangs or prepares for a chunibyo speech. However, standing firmly while holding the school bag like this completely focuses the character's center of gravity and that aura along a central axis. The wind at night was actually a bit strong, and the direction of the wig and bangs fluttered quite intensely during the shoot, but it happened to capture a bit of a disheveled and casual feel, which counts as an unexpected harvest.

The third photo is a slightly more relaxed posture, holding up a strand of hair while grabbing it, with the school bag properly put on and the body naturally tilting. This movement leans more toward an everyday feel, making it seem like she just finished school and is waiting for a friend, or suddenly thought of some chunibyo setting. The degree of shoulder relaxation is actually quite hard to handle in cosplay; if it's too tense, it will look like standing at military attention. For snapshots like these convention photos, one needs to integrate that sense of ease into the posture as much as possible.

The temperature on the day of the Guangzhou CP Exhibition was actually still quite high, so the material chosen for this sailor suit short skirt was a more breathable cotton blend. However, the shooting time was basically after the sun went down. Running around the pathways near the venue at night with a heavy prop bag to switch camera angles was no small test of physical stamina. But when looking through the viewfinder and seeing the recreated effect in the lens, I felt all these efforts were well worth it. The process of doing cosplay itself is a process of converting details of 2D paper characters into real-world visuals. Every time I take on a character, from the initial fabric selection, to makeup adjustments, and then to communication and feedback with the photographer during the shoot, it's always a highly interesting experience.

This night shoot plan was also primarily aimed at capturing "chunibyo vibes in daily life." Without arranging exceptionally exaggerated studio magic circles or post-processing special effects, I think the simple sailor suit, red school bag, and the bandages on the knees, paired with the quiet night path and warm ambient light, are already enough to express this anime girl's unique vitality. After going back to look through the raw files after the shoot, I could truly feel that exclusive youthful girl temperament and a bit of unbridled chunibyo spirit.

Perhaps this is the charm of photography—freezing a split-second movement and expression. As Rikka's cosplayer, being able to appear before everyone in this concrete way brings a highly authentic sense of happiness. This experience at the Guangzhou CP Exhibition made me realize even more that good convention photos really rely on the preparation before the shoot being in place, including hair styling, garment flatness, and pondering the character's habitual small gestures; every detail has its necessity for existing in the final finished photo.
