Tonight's sea breeze carried a rare coolness, which perfectly matched the atmosphere desired for this sailor suit photo shoot. The blue-and-white sailor dress, paired with a white sailor hat featuring an anchor pattern, maximized the overall collegiate and two-dimensional vibe. To enhance the energetic feel, I wore a long twin-tailed wig and emphasized the contours of the eye makeup and the translucency of the lips, ensuring that the face maintained a clean and translucent texture even under complex nighttime lighting.
This shoot used a Sony A7CR paired with the FE 50-150mm F2 GM lens. In night portrait shooting, the advantages of the medium-telephoto focal length are very obvious; it can compress the background space well and blur the gorgeous yet messy neon lights in the distance of the city into beautiful circular bokeh. We took locations on the overpass and the riverside pathway, utilizing metal railings and wooden flooring as foreground or background to increase the depth of the image.
Regarding the use of props, that huge pink polka-dot lollipop was truly the finishing touch. The pink-and-blue striped handle echoed my skirt perfectly, and holding it in hand allowed for dynamic pictures even with a regular standing pose. And that bag of blue puffed snacks was actually used to replenish energy during our shooting breaks, but the naturally captured state instead gave a friendly, next-door-girl vibe. Also, for the photo hugging a white plush puppy, I deliberately sat on the floor, slightly curled up my body, and paired it with pure white over-the-knee stockings to present a quiet and soft visual effect.
In terms of pose guidance, to highlight leg lines, most of my standing poses placed the center of gravity on one side, with the other side slightly raised or bent at the knee. The white stockings paired with black patent leather chunky-heeled Mary Janes created a strong contrast with the classic blue-white-black color scheme in the night scene, and also flattered the leg shape very well. When sitting, besides extending both legs forward to elongate proportions, I also tried a crossed-leg pose, letting the layered feel of the skirt hem drop naturally.
For night lighting, the main source used a continuous light with a softbox, with the color temperature adjusted slightly colder to offset the warm yellow of the streetlights in the environment, while utilizing side-backlight to outline the edge contours of the hair, making the subject more three-dimensional. During post-processing color grading, I didn't drastically change the original colors; I mainly darkened the surroundings, brightened the subject's face, strengthened the cold-and-warm contrast, and gave the overall image a more cinematic feel.
In fact, shooting in this muggy summer night wearing long sleeves and stockings really required some endurance. But looking at the dynamic feel of the evening breeze gently blowing through the hair in each photo, and the moment the sailor suit skirt fluttered slightly in the wind, it felt like all the early preparations and sweat paid off. The style of the sailor dress inherently carries a refreshing attribute, and combined with the night scenery and lighting foil, it successfully recorded the gentleness and romance of the summer night.
