Our originally tight schedule this morning truly felt like the anime characters walked into reality only after putting on this set of grey hair and yellow-and-black color-matched gear. When preparing this costume previously, my partner and I put a lot of energy into restoring the tailoring details, especially that outer yellow-and-black spliced windbreaker and the inner white slouch-neck T-shirt, which, coordinated with the outer straps and metal buckles, created a highly rich sense of layers visually.
The red-brown wide leather belt at the waist is one of the visual centers of the entire outfit, with the metal buckle beautifully emphasizing a sense of core power and making the body proportions look sharper. For the lower wear, I selected black shorts paired with high-heeled leather ankle boots, which, together with the black-and-grey gloves, allowed the styling to preserve the ruggedness of the tactical style outfit while being highly suitable for walking around in outdoor scenes like green gardens. We specially chose this lush grass lawn as the background, where the vast dark green of the plants formed a highly comfortable cool-and-warm contrast with the bright yellow details of the costume. Under the lens, it presented a more open breathing room than studio shoots; as the outdoor sunlight cast over the yellow-and-black coat, the texture of the fabric blend was displayed exceptionally well.
The yellow-and-black baseball bat we held in hand was a custom-made prop, carrying a slight matte texture on its body and holding a solid weight in hand that made swinging feel highly natural. During the shoot, we experimented with several standings, such as that high-angle shot looking down where the two of us crouched on the hard concrete floor, looking up at the lens together. At that moment, I put my index finger near my cheek, while my partner leaned the bat along the side of the face, making it look highly vivid under the clustering of the frame. In another full-body standing photo, the two of us tacitly slung our bats behind our shoulders with our feet slightly apart, creating a sense of ready-to-go dynamic momentum and a dashing, capable temperament through natural hand movements.
Having discussed the costume and props, let's talk about the makeup and hair details. This light silver-grey hair wig heavily tests the three-dimensional depth of facial features and the color coordination of the makeup. I deepened the eye makeup with earth tones, paired with light brown colored contacts, focusing all visual attention on the gaze to make it look more concentrated. Shooting outdoor cosplay, the biggest fear is the wig flying around messily; I used hairspray beforehand to tidy up every layer of the wig and combed it into a naturally messy look to avoid being too rigid, ensuring it wouldn't look frizzy even under intense sunlight.
Actually, this outdoor convention photoshoot process was quite tiring because we had to constantly adjust our actions and light angles under direct sunlight. However, to record those moments of breaking the dimension wall, we felt that spending more physical energy was highly worth it. When walking to crowded areas, we would occasionally encounter fellow fans stopping to discuss; this complete, immersive experience is precisely a major factor that makes me passionate about cosplay activities. After putting on this outfit, the power granted by the character allowed me to find a more natural state of expression during movement transitions and eye contact. The two of us cooperated with great chemistry, needing almost no words to capture the desired compositions. Looking closely at the final prints, from the tightness of the yellow-and-black straps and the texture of the gloves to the contact boundaries between the boot soles and the ground, everything presented a beautiful texture in the subtle reflections of light and shadow.
Regarding the fabric selection and production of this costume, we actually pondered over it repeatedly. The blended fabric of the coat is not easy to wrinkle, keeping a flat silhouette even after walking around for a full morning. The loose treatment of the inner neckline makes the neck lines look very clean, and its natural drape is not only comfortable but also conceals parts of the seams. In post-color-grading, I focused on emphasizing the translucent skin tone and eye highlights in the high-angle shot, wanting to give the audience a close sense of interaction; in the full-body shot, I preserved the native outdoor colors to let the grass green and tile grey reflect realistically, ensuring a narrative depth to the frame. Looking at these final photos, there is a particularly grounded feeling in my heart; walking through the real world in this substantial outfit with the baseball bat in hand, I can truly feel the anime setting and real-life texture progressively blending together.
