When I first did this Yin Yue cosplay, everything from wig styling to garment details was still in an exploratory phase, and the photo kept from back then has now become an essential prop for this shoot. This marks my Nth time bringing Yin Yue from A Record of a Mortal's Journey to Immortality to life; re-examining this styling has brought a wealth of new insights and reflections.
First, looking at the overall hair and makeup this time: the Silver hair wig requires careful attention to layered cutting, and the bangs must not be too dense, otherwise they obstruct the emotional delivery of the eyes. The Animal ears prop atop the head is a major highlight; the orange gradient on the inner ear and the silver-white down on the outer rim must be combed out to achieve full volume. In the photo, the silver metallic hairpin ornaments at the base of the ears are crucial for both anchoring and aesthetics; I spent a long time fine-tuning them before the mirror to find the optimal angle. In terms of eye makeup, to suit the character's temperament in this Ancient style cosplay, I wore vivid blue colored contacts paired with dense lashes and a rosy blush, complemented by a lustrous red lip glaze to establish high color contrast across the face.
The tactile quality of the costume is particularly vital before the camera lens. The fabric of this silver-gray ensemble carries a metallic sheen, catching and reflecting illumination differently under shifting light angles. The white plush trim around the neckline and shoulders enhances overall dimensional volume. The silver relief embroidery and jacquard patterns across the garments are exceedingly delicate; recreating these details required considerable effort during material sourcing and tailoring. The exposed black inner shoulder straps and red sash fabric at the waist inject striking color accents, breaking any monotony of a single color tone.
This photoshoot featured a unique compositional design: holding the photo card from my very first Yin Yue cosplay in my hand. In that snapshot, I was cradling a small white kitten with a golden signature below. Taking a selfie facing the camera while holding that picture created a resonant dialogue across time and space. On the screen in the upper-left corner, a 3D model reference of the character was displayed, allowing me to cross-reference expressions and angles at any moment during shooting. Such comparison demands the utmost fidelity to the character design and has deepened my understanding of the persona.
Throughout the shoot, conveying the character's dynamic, ethereal charm was a true challenge. While the attire and props were comprehensive, the character's spirit is the genuine soul of the performance. Before the camera, I explored diverse gazes, shifting from tranquil serenity to subtle playfulness, adjusting slight head tilts to discover the most fitting frame. This selfie set not only documents the styling, but also chronicles my personal growth with this character. From initial awkwardness to present fluency, from mere imitation to infusing my own artistic interpretation, every outfit and prop has borne witness to this journey of practice. Every detail of hair, makeup, and wardrobe came together to give the character three-dimensional life—not merely piling on clothes, but coming closer to the heart of the design through meticulous care.
