[Reimu Hakurei Cosplay] Touhou Project's Red Shrine Maiden and Flying Talismans

Cosplaying Touhou Project's Reimu Hakurei requires paying utmost attention to the accuracy of the red and white color scheme, as well as the light, airy feel of flying talismans. The shrine maiden outfit chosen this time specially had its waistline adjusted in tailoring, making the short skirt paired with wide sleeves yield better body proportions. The plush white hair accessories and red bows were secured firmly, ensuring no heavy burden while allowing large sleeve-swinging movements. The wig was also layered carefully to make sure tossing my head wouldn't turn the hair into a tangled mess, presenting an airy yet not overly chaotic visual effect.

To recreate the atmosphere of a shrine, stone lanterns and a wooden prop box were prepared in advance as the foreground, dotted with two bottles of sake so that shooting in a wide indoor space wouldn't look too empty. The paper talismans were all hardened using lightweight materials so that when thrown, they maintained a flat state without spinning limp, making it easier to capture a floating effect.

I'm deeply grateful to Kazami Mutsuki for collaborating during this shoot; the photographer had incredible timing for capturing motion. We shot hundreds of times, and every single time, right at the moment a pose was set, the camera rapidly captured the talismans floating naturally in mid-air. The hardest part on set was the swirling red and white ribbon—it wasn't added in post-production, but relied on the wind raised by swinging sleeves and the photographer's ultra-fast shutter speed to capture the ribbon at its most stretched moment.

In the photos, you see me standing on bluestone steps with my body turned slightly and holding a talisman, a pose that actually took a long time trying before we found it. It needed to look relaxed and casual while carrying tension without feeling too stiff. The location was chosen in a spacious, bright indoor glass pavilion with excellent natural light streaming through the skylight. This neutral light required little artificial fill to genuinely showcase the fabric texture of the clothing. The light reflection was just right, clearly highlighting the skirt's details; such bright, translucent lighting is very suitable for expressing Reimu's clear and capable temperament in Touhou Project.

When producing photos, I often think about whether a character's personality can be hidden within movements. Although Reimu is a bit greedy for money and loves drinking tea in the original work, her meticulous focus whenever facing incidents is very clear. I wanted to find that balance of being both laid-back yet reliable in this pose combining motion and stasis. The red text on the prop talismans was rewritten based on original settings with higher contrast to enhance the photo's visual impact.

With a complete set of gear, the props and backpack were very heavy, but during shooting, one must constantly keep the props neat and accurately positioned. To present the best results, several scene layouts were repeatedly adjusted midway. From styling preparation and early prop assembly to final site cleanup, it indeed took a lot of time. But seeing the final results with talismans flying everywhere and swirling red-and-white ribbons makes all the hard work completely worth it. Every attempt at high-fidelity cosplay like this helps me realize my output ideas are improving bit by bit. I not only gained beautiful photos, but also gained a deeper physical understanding of the character.
