Today's outdoor photoshoot yielded several frames with an undeniably striking contrast. I originally set out to deliver a proper, serious Fern cosplay from Frieren: Beyond Journey's End, but while handling the staff prop, I suddenly realized that extending the front end gave it the exact grip and balance of a heavy sniper rifle. That led to the very first photo where I'm aiming the long staff straight at the lens with both hands, captioned 'This thing is way more effective than magic'—even I couldn't help laughing out loud when reviewing it on the camera display.
Wearing this costume felt considerably heavier than anticipated. Although the black hooded robe holds a sharp, crisp silhouette, moving through the woods meant the hem frequently caught on brush and twigs, and between takes I had to constantly fend off tiny forest bugs. The white dress worn underneath appears light and airy, yet to faithfully embody Fern's calm, meticulous demeanor, I kept my shoulders and back pulled taut, maintaining an intensity akin to being poised to cast magic at any second. The purple wig was cut with blunt bangs that fell low over my eyes, lending an unmistakable air of quiet authority once put on, though the long hair ends tangled easily outdoors and required detangling with every step.
The prop was the undisputed centerpiece of this shoot. That long purple cloth wrap encasing the staff actually houses a solid core wrapped in padding. Leveling it horizontally with both hands severely taxed my arm strength, and because of the staff's considerable length, managing its center of gravity was tricky. To project that mountain-like steadiness in the photos, my arms were actually trembling faintly beneath the fabric, forcing me to shake them out quickly during camera resets.
My friends alongside me were having a blast too. When I began aiming the staff like a sniper rifle, everyone burst into cheers and teasing. In the second behind-the-scenes shot, the red-haired guy gave me a huge thumbs-up, while the blue-haired companion took the prop to test its heft, almost dropping it and exclaiming that it was drastically heavier than it appeared. The friend with silver-white hair ran right over to check angles, acting even more invested than I was. Grouped together, our poses gradually drifted from formal spellcasting stances into a full-blown brainstorm on tactical firefight poses. Throughout the shoot, we navigated fluctuating forest light and dodged dry branches; to capture the ideal low-angle perspective, the photographer knelt straight into the mud.
Ultimately, the greatest joy of every cosplay isn't just seeing the final polished images, but exploring unexpected facets of a character alongside fellow enthusiasts. Using the staff as a sniper rifle may diverge from canon lore, yet it revealed that pragmatic side of Fern's personality—if there's a simpler way to solve a problem, why not take it? Despite the practical hurdles of wearing the costume and handling cumbersome props, every bit of physical exertion was worth it to achieve memorable frames. When releasing the formal photoshoot, I will naturally return to standard spellcasting poses, but these quirky outtakes undeniably injected tremendous fun into the shoot. Experimenting with uninhibited stances on the grass and brainstorming alongside friends is truly the most addictive part of outdoor cosplay.
