Shooting this set for Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion came purely from both of us feeling this setting resonated perfectly with our current creative mindset. My partner and I had previously collaborated on multiple shoots, and this time we decided to challenge the contractual relationship between Lelouch and C.C. During our early discussions, we made it clear that we needed to capture both an aloof, imposing aura and the subtle bond between them. To match the characters' temperament, we specifically tracked down a studio featuring a vintage fireplace and red velvet draping. I must admit, the costume materials were exceptionally refined—the dark lustrous fabric paired with the red high collar produced stunning reflections under hard light. My long green hair gained rich texture under the studio lighting, which, combined with purplish-red contact lenses, brought out the right character feeling immediately. I rarely wear all-black attire accented with gold embroidery, but paired with over-the-knee White stockings and high boots, the complete look commanded an immense, dignified presence.
During the shoot, most of our discussions revolved around positioning and postural nuances. In the first photo, I stand behind with my hand resting on his shoulder while he sits on a chair holding a skull. The light and shadow in that frame are richly layered, relying entirely on tailored hard lighting to carve out sharp silhouettes. The skull prop was also prepared by us—it felt heavy in hand and immediately injected an aura of mystery. The second photo takes an entirely different angle, where I am half-kneeling against his leg with my hands clasped together; that low-angle upward perspective perfectly highlighted the intensity of my gaze. That chemistry between us was indispensable—few words were needed, as a single glance communicated postural intent. Additionally, the mirrors and floral arrangements in the scene were arranged just right. In post-processing, we only did minimal retouching to retain genuine skin texture and makeup nuances, staying as faithful as possible to the authentic atmosphere of Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion.
Because we were shooting an accomplices theme, we placed great emphasis on presenting the overall aura. During shooting breaks, we discussed the contract lore from the story, feeling that a bond spanning endless years had to be expressed through our facial expressions and physical poise. In terms of set choreography, I subtly shifted my body orientation based on the photographer's suggestions, allowing the light to strike the folds of the skirt hem directly, optimizing the reflections from the fabric and metal buttons. Wearing this ensemble against the red velvet environment truly induced a sense of time travel. Checking the raw shots, I felt we had captured all the cold, vintage grandeur we aimed for. Being able to carve out time this year to finish a themed shoot I genuinely love was incredibly fulfilling—recreating characters alongside a reliable partner is such a pure creative joy.
Preparation for this shoot began two weeks prior—from booking the venue to coordinating hair and makeup, every step dictated the final outcome's quality. I was personally extremely satisfied with the makeup: a clean, porcelain foundation paired with pale purple lipstick steered clear of modern mundane aesthetics, evoking the chilly, ethereal anime look. The matching green wig also required immense attention; we adjusted the curvature of the ends repeatedly to ensure it looked sleek and flowing even in motion. My partner's wig was styled with meticulous care as well—the bangs, messy yet razor-sharp, combined with his expressive gaze, instantly channeled Lelouch's cunning intellect and majestic regal aura.
We also invested significant thought into using props. For instance, with the skull, we experimented with diverse grips and angles before settling on the pose in the first photo, which both conveyed his character and allowed my presence to blend naturally into the frame. The ornate chandelier, relief carvings, candles, and row of purple blossoms in the background served as gorgeous accents; on set, we were essentially staging a theatrical drama. The rhythm of the photographer's shutter clicks felt musical, as if documenting each beat of our complicit interaction. In post-production, rather than opting for hyper-saturated color grading, we preserved the nuances within the dark tones and shadows to emphasize the tangible texture and ambient mood, honoring the dark aesthetic we wished to present.
To return to the heart of it, as a cosplayer, I believe nailing a character lies not merely in costume accuracy, but in emotional immersion. Because immersion arises through dynamic physical interaction, the final shots captured such natural rapport. The shooting day was physically demanding, requiring repeated posture shifts while balancing in high-heeled long boots and a gown, all while syncing with gestures like him holding my hand or resting a hand on my shoulder. Yet when the raw photos arrived, every bit of sweat felt validated. I hope the released photos allow fellow fans to feel the cold, resolute bond we aimed to convey, as well as the wonderful chemistry between Lelouch and C.C. This creative journey with Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion has been my most fulfilling recent offline project.
