[Youmu Konpaku cosplay] Gardener of the Recluse: Sword Shadows and Blade Glints in the Garden

This photoshoot features Youmu Konpaku from Touhou Project, themed around the Gardener of the Recluse. Having always loved characters that blend cuteness with a sharp, lethal edge, I prepared very diligently for this shoot.

The outfit is a carefully selected Wa-lolita dress. The main body is dark green, shimmering faintly in the sunlight, with black lace trimming along the hem accented with small pink-and-white blossoms, evoking an exquisitely delicate maidenly charm. The wide-sleeved white top is the most prominent feature of the costume; the cuffs boast multi-layered ruffles that drape with flowing elegance, though it made raising my arms during the shoot quite strenuous. A sash around the dress cinches the waist nicely, but being tied so tightly made eating inconvenient, leaving me to rely on water to stay energized.

For props, I selected several black-scabbard katanas tied with red cord knots at the hilts, with one katana adorned with red-and-white decorative flowers. Since Youmu Konpaku is canonically a master swordsman, I practiced in front of the mirror at home for over half an hour to nail dynamic sword-drawing stances. In particular, two-handed sword grips required maintaining the blade's precise angle and conveying lethality without distorting the silhouette of the skirt. The swords were genuinely heavy; holding them for long periods caused my arms to ache and tremble, and I almost dropped one on my foot at one point. The katana tucked at my waist bumped against my thigh when walking and pressed painfully against me when sitting.

It was scorching hot on the day of the shoot, and the garden was swarming with mosquitoes. Wearing such heavy clothing laden with burdensome gear truly felt like being in a sauna. The wig was a white bob with blunt bangs that instantly created an aura upon wearing, but the black floral and tassel accessories on both sides were quite heavy and prone to falling off. To secure them, I pinned over a dozen bobby pins onto my head, which felt tight and sore. Yet those tassel ornaments made my facial contour look much more delicate.

During the shoot, the photographer was very strict, demanding that I project the aloof and dangerous demeanor of a gardener. When standing, to accentuate curves, I turned slightly sideways with crossed legs, showcasing the paired White stockings and leather shoes—an angle that heavily tested thigh muscle coordination. When sitting on a stone by the water, I extended both legs straight forward while gazing at reflections on the water surface, letting a sense of solitude permeate my gaze. The single-leg leap shot was extraordinarily tough—balancing on one leg like a ballet dancer while keeping the blade horizontal in hand took countless attempts to get a single satisfying frame. I often treat shoots as physical endurance challenges, constantly fine-tuning postures to reach the ideal state.

My favorite photo in the entire set is the final front-facing shot standing with the sword; the composition is full and balanced, not only showcasing the costume's rich layering but also capturing the lines of the legs and White stockings beautifully. Although the process was grueling, all the initial dilemmas over outfit selection and post-shoot photo picking melted away the moment the final images emerged. This combat-ready maiden aesthetic in 2D anime is immensely captivating, and recreating it was a personal milestone. Every cosplay of a beloved character feels like a journey of rediscovery; the sweat remains in the photos and in my memories.
