[Kumiko Omae Cosplay] Sound! Euphonium: Playing at Night Atop Mount Daikichi

Hiking up Mount Daikichi carrying thirty jin (approx. 15 kg) of brass instruments was hands down the most extreme physical endurance test since I started cosplay. A twenty-jin euphonium combined with a ten-jin trumpet weighed heavily on my shoulders, dragging downward with every single step. Early September in Uji remained sweltering; sweat quickly soaked through my undershirt, and the straps dug painfully into my shoulders. Yet to faithfully recreate the classic Mount Daikichi night scene from Sound! Euphonium, every physical trial had to be endured with gritted teeth. As a cosplayer bringing Kumiko Omae Cosplay to life, beyond nailing the precise styling of the costume and wig, the authenticity of the props directly dictated the visual depth of the final photos. Although made of real metal, holding that substantial weight in my hands allowed me to truly immerse myself into the character's unwavering devotion to music. To mirror her temperament, I repeatedly practiced the fingerings and holding postures, ensuring wrist angles and valve presses remained fluid and natural, so that even subtly tense muscle lines from supporting the weight became an organic part of the composition.

My companion @厨神过儿, cosplaying Reina Kousaka while carrying a twenty-jin tuba, had an even tougher trek. We cheered each other on through the darkness, taking intermittent pauses before finally reaching the mountaintop observation deck. When the city lights of Uji spread out before our eyes into an intricately layered sea of brilliance, all exhaustion was instantly displaced by sheer awe. That breathtaking visual impact made every bit of effort feel thoroughly worthwhile. Photographer @天枰君 was exceptional at capturing the nighttime chiaroscuro, utilizing a wide aperture to blur distant urban lights into glistening bokeh orbs while using fill light to ensure our faces and instruments remained crisp, lending an extraordinarily rich texture to the reflections on the golden brass.

For this teaser preview set, my personal standards for post-processing are quite high. Retouching night portraits is technically demanding: you must suppress high-ISO digital noise while preserving authentic skin textures, avoiding excessive skin-smoothing that leads to an unnatural look. The background city bokeh requires smooth color gradients without harsh banding. I will focus heavily on restoring garment details and boosting the metallic gleam of the brass instruments. To polish this piece, I will also re-crop the framing to ensure visual harmony when Kumiko and Reina Kousaka share the frame. While hiking with such heavy props was an immense challenge, completing this cosplay creation amidst Uji's nightscape is an incredible fulfillment for any fan of the anime. Over the coming days, I will meticulously polish every raw cut, piecing together this cherished memory of Mount Daikichi bit by bit in this Japan travel photography and Anime pilgrimage project.
