[Huohuo cosplay] Being a Maid in a Traditional Tea Room of Honkai: Star Rail

On such an afternoon bathed in dappled sunlight, I took this carefully prepared Huohuo maid outfit and hid inside this old tea house filled with the breath of daily life. The theme of this shoot was very clear, which was to transform that ghost-catching little girl, who is always shivering out of fear, into a cute maid working in a traditional-style tea room.

Actually, when I first decided to take this set of photos, I thought that I must find a place with wooden textures and natural light and shadow, because a pure lighting studio might wipe away the primitive texture inherent to this kind of clothing. The shooting location was chosen in a very traditional Chinese courtyard, where you could smell the scent of aged wood mixed with a faint tea aroma right upon entering. Those old bamboo chairs, heavy wooden doors, and wooden window lattices carved with complex patterns were all natural backdrops. The afternoon sunlight was excellent; the warm yellow light passed through the wooden grilles, casting long shadows on the ground and bamboo tables. This warm tone, when paired with Huohuo's mint-green hair color and fluffy blue tail, created an inexplicable sense of gap-moe.

The details of the clothes in the frame actually took a lot of thought. The mint-green wig was finely trimmed, preserving the signature hair parting and straight bangs, and the small white hair accessories on top were also given a layer of fluffiness, making the silhouette of the entire head shape look very full. The most eye-catching thing was, of course, that huge, fluffy blue tail behind me. It was not only massive in size, but its texture was also made very soft. During the shoot, as long as I turned my body slightly, the tail could bring about a lightweight swing, adding some dynamic implications to the static photos.

I especially love the texture of the costume. The small golden bell and red bowknot at the neckline are the visual focus; that rounded golden bell reflects bright metallic luster under side light, becoming a highly agile little highlight on the chest. The white sleeveless top is very refreshing, with two exquisite golden buttons used as embellishments at the chest position so it won't look too monotonous. The sleeves adopt a detachable, separated design—a kind of aqua-blue loose puff sleeve, with small bowknots and golden piping additionally adorned at the cuffs, which modifies the lines of the arms very softly while revealing a touch of Chinese-style gentleness. The layers of the skirt hem are very rich: a white cloud-edged apron paired with a deep aqua-blue vertical-striped midi skirt, and the innermost layer reveals a white pleated petticoat, which can present a great three-dimensional feel whether standing or sitting. The exaggerated deep blue large bowknot belt at the waist and the printed small round bag with tassels hanging on the side all make this maid outfit cosplay look very complete and substantial.

The design of the lower body happens to elongate the visual proportions. The white loose slouch socks perfectly wrap around the calves, and the dark small tassels adorning the top of the socks, combined with the black round-toe leather shoes, add a stroke of charming and lively youthful girlhood style to the whole look. When putting on this complete set, I instantly felt as if I had entered Huohuo's world.

During the shooting process, I tried many different states and expressions. When holding up the wooden stick, I actually wanted to intentionally put on a bit of a dominant aura like "Mr. Tail," but my gaze still couldn't hide that soft-cute feeling. The movement of touching my lips with a finger simulates thinking, or rather, thinking about the small thoughts of how to satisfy the customers. The shot standing on one leg while holding a wooden tray happened to catch the best side-backlight. The sunlight outlined a layer of golden rim light around the edges of my hair and tail, and there were floating light spots of fine dust in the air, as if adding a thin layer of filter to the frame.

In fact, the hardest part to grasp about copying Huohuo is her gap-moe of being scared but having to bite the bullet anyway. Therefore, compared to purely striking cold or aloof poses, I prefer to recreate her personality through small actions, such as shielding the chest, propping the chin in a daze, or clenching fists to cheer myself up. Combined with the tea set placed in the bamboo steamer and the inverted white porcelain cups on the table, the entire frame was filled with a daily and warm atmosphere.

This set of finished photos didn't choose overly flashy post-processing special effects; most of the light and shadow details were the effects captured in the early stage. I personally highly recommend this shooting method of utilizing natural light to shape the frame's texture, because although controlling the light is slightly more troublesome than artificial lighting, the captured effects are often the most natural and vivid. As a cosplayer, being able to record her maid state in a truly perceptible way in such a sun-drenched old tea house filled with the breath of life was genuinely a highly joyful shooting experience.
