This set of Plum Blossoms Blooming in Snow themed Ruan Mei cosplay photoshoot is finally sorted out to meet everyone. Recently, I've been tied down by various trivial matters in real life and work, and indeed too busy to turn around, which resulted in not being able to reply to comments and private messages in time. Looking back at this photo set, I am personally relatively satisfied with the completion of the entire makeup, styling, and scene. For the hair part, we chose a method of blending a blue-green gradient dye at the bottom of the black hair. This hair color with a certain highlight feel actually heavily tests the smoothness and layers of the hair strands. We specially did layered trimming and styling for this blue highlighted wig. Paired with highly translucent lake-blue colored contacts, the temperament in the gaze—carrying a touch of aloofness yet without losing gentleness—exactly fits the setting in my heart.
The costume's design details are very rich. The main body of the top utilizes a patchwork of soft white lace and dark blue velvet. The neckline features a highly eye-catching dark green embedded gemstone, with a pink bow extending below, which exactly neutralizes the sense of stability brought by the dark-colored sleeves. To make the visual focus clearer, we specially matched two different gloves—a dark blue suede version and a white lace version—which both provide a contrast in actions and enrich the texture of the frame. The string of pearl leg rings on the thigh is the finishing touch of the entire styling. The warmth of the pearl luster contrasts with the fairness of the leg, presenting a wonderful depth of layers under the soft lighting. The small white flower held in the mouth echoes the flower hair accessory on the side hair, injecting a touch of playful spirituality into the whole look.
For the shooting scene, we laid out a large area of white plush carpets to create a soft base resembling winter snow hitting the ground. The surrounding area was coordinated with pink-and-white artificial flower branches, scattered calligraphy sheer curtains, and exquisite white vases as background decorations. In terms of lighting, instead of using a single white light, we boldly experimented with interwoven purplish-red and cool-white ambient lighting. Under the lens's high contrast, the cool white light outlines the silhouette of the body, while the purplish-red bottom light makes the frame present a near-illusory dreamscape. We selected multiple angles during the shoot, such as low-angle shots and high-angle views later on, which can better showcase the body's extended posture and the flowing nature of the attire for this atmospheric photography session.
For cosplay creation, looking identical on the outside is just the foundation; how to convey the character's introverted emotions through specific movements, expressions, and atmosphere is what I wanted to break through most in this shoot. Although everyone teases that this character is very detached, when truly standing in front of the lens, wanting to grasp that kind of ethereal coldness and indifference actually heavily tests the control of body language. Every blink, slight movement of the mouth corners, and even the angle of hand placement was polished during the long process of blending the makeup and styling.
Every frame in the final photoshoot, from the initial fabric purchase and wig styling to the on-site light and shadow arrangement, has poured out the heart and soul of our entire small team. Although my replies are slow now, I will read every single comment seriously. This creative experience is a great technical precipitation for me, and I also hope the vibe of this photo set can transmit the artistic conception we wanted to express.
