Lighting and crowd movement at anime conventions are often unpredictable. To wrap up this Highlander Twins shoot before the venue closed, we scouted this floor-to-ceiling window as our primary backdrop in advance. The focus of this set was to capture the crisp structure of the uniforms and the chemistry between the duo. The costumes of Hikari Tachibana & Nozomi Tachibana feature sharp, clean silhouettes—deep navy uniforms accented with gold buttons and blue trim that look exceptionally spirited, with their elf ears and green hair serving as the most memorable visual hooks. For the lighting setup, we mainly used a Jinbei HD250max with an 80cm octagonal softbox as the key light; the even, diffused illumination effectively eliminated chaotic shadows cast by the window's natural daylight, making the texture of the White stockings and skin appear far more translucent. For fill light, a Jinbei HD100 bare flash was fired directly to lift shadow details and emphasize the fabric's dimensional layers. Thanks to the direct flash, the final straight-out-of-camera results on the Sony A7 IV were remarkably clean with accurate color rendition. Since this was a two-person shoot, we experimented with both seated and standing poses. For the standing shots in particular, staggering our positions slightly front-to-back allowed us to accentuate both leg contours and the texture of the White stockings without crowding the edges of the frame. White gloves paired with black boots gave the characters an added sense of strength. Wearing wigs and heavy boots was quite sweltering during the shoot, but to convey the characters' stern, composed expressions and postures, we calibrated our poses multiple times to ensure the composition remained distraction-free. Shooting at Firefly ACG Expo was a refreshing experience that taught me a lot about sculpting character portraits with artificial light in convention settings. I am thrilled to capture our vision of Hikari Tachibana & Nozomi Tachibana through such vivid photography.
