I decided on doing this Kafka cosplay swimsuit shoot a while back. Understanding this character can come from multiple dimensions; to capture the relaxed ease of Kafka from Honkai: Star Rail on vacation, I specifically chose an Infinity pool that combines water hues with distant scenery. For the outfit, I skipped the complex armor in favor of a minimalist black halter swimsuit top paired with a semi-sheer red tulle skirt. The side of the red skirt features a criss-cross lace-up design; this see-through, diaphanous material takes on an airy texture under waterside lighting, perfectly fitting the summer vacation theme.
The weather was exceptionally clear on the day of the shoot. The blue sky and white clouds created a vivid blue-and-white contrast with the azure pool water, which set off the saturation of the magenta wig beautifully. The bouquet of pink roses in hand was a prop picked on location to balance the high saturation of the overall palette, preventing the figure from looking visually heavy against the blue sky. Because direct sunlight causes strong reflections on the Infinity pool, I intentionally posed looking back over my shoulder and standing sideways during the shoot, highlighting the contrast between the black swimsuit and red sheer skirt through the curves of the back. For lighting capture, we favored soft, high-key lighting to make the skin tone look translucent and natural while reducing overall visual harshness.
In Cosplay photography, scenery, props, and lighting are rarely entirely perfect. Although the pool water was gorgeous, outdoor winds were hard to control and the bouquet could easily be tousled, making dynamic snapshot timing a real test during the shoot. Throughout the session, I repeatedly adjusted how I held the bouquet so it wouldn't block my face while visually creating foreground-to-background depth of field. Many people might think more complex poses look better, but for this kind of vacation style, effortless, unconscious relaxation is actually the hardest to convey.
The makeup for this look didn't need to be overly heavy, but to match Kafka's aura, the eye shadow and eyeliner were elongated slightly to give the gaze a more focused, captivating look. For hair styling, I opted for an updo with subtle wisps and bangs, ensuring the strands would float naturally and gracefully when the outdoor breeze blew. The red-and-black color pairing is common in many characters' Swimwear outfit designs, but on Kafka from Honkai: Star Rail, it adds an extra layer of lazy yet dangerous allure.
Looking back at this set after the shoot, my personal favorite is still this perspective of turning to look back with my back to the camera. On one hand, it showcases the subtle lines of the back, and on the other, the silhouette holding flowers adds rich emotional atmosphere. Unlike combat-style cosplays with high-impact visuals, interpreting a more lifestyle-oriented scene made it easier for me to tap into the character's relaxed state. Bringing together everyday scenarios, natural scenery, and character personality is an approach to Cosplay photography I find truly fascinating.
A major advantage of this location was the background mountains and sea view. By utilizing lens spatial perspective, placing the subject in the mid-ground or slightly off-center preserves the subject's prominence while retaining the deep blues of the entire pool. In post-color grading, we leaned towards a more translucent, cool tone to tone down the overexposed glare of harsh summer sunlight. All in all, this shoot was a delightfully comfortable outdoor experience. Standing in the water for a long time was chilly, but to achieve the ideal visual result, it was all worthwhile.
