Slipping into this form-fitting blue-and-white patent leather bodysuit, my immediate impression was how impeccably the elasticity and snug fit were tailored, beautifully accentuating the character's silhouette. This time, I portrayed Asuma Toki from Blue Archive. The overall styling centers on a vibrant glossy royal blue, accented by a pure white bow tie, cuffs, and white stockings, creating a distinct and clean contrast of light and shadow under the studio lights.
To faithfully recreate the character's iconic bunny ears and floating halo, I repeatedly adjusted the counterweights of the headpiece before shooting, ensuring the bunny ears remained upright and the halo wouldn't shift out of place during larger movements. The sci-fi prop firearm used was a 1:1 lightweight replica; although crafted via 3D printing and painting, the surface featured metallic engraved detailing. Holding it in hand, the gun's balanced heft allowed me to naturally control arm tension—whether raising it one-handed or holding it across my profile—which greatly supported expressive posing across diverse angles.
In directing poses, photographer @DianzhangDD was meticulous about lighting, specially adjusting the softbox height for the patent leather highlights across the chest and legs. To capture Asuma Toki's distinct calm and tactical demeanor, I worked with the photographer on several sequences: sitting while holding the firearm, posing with peace signs mimicking bunny ears, and glancing over the shoulder. In particular, for the standing pose mimicking bunny ears with both hands overhead, the tall ears required angling my hands slightly further back to avoid obscuring my facial contour. During the shoot, bending joints while crouching or sitting created natural wrinkles in the white stockings, adding dynamic texture rather than looking stiff.
The makeup also aligned with the cool, reserved vibe of the original illustration, emphasizing the outer eye contours and rich lip saturation to give my gaze an effortless composure when looking directly into the camera. Between takes, I checked the patent leather fabric for dust; glossy textures demand utmost cleanliness, as even a tiny fingerprint or lint particle becomes prominent under harsh studio lights, so I kept an anti-static brush and alcohol wipes handy.
The charm of this look lies in the visual impact of fusing futuristic sci-fi tech with traditional bunny girl elements; the white cuffs and bow tie soften the visual weight of the dominant blue, making the overall look sharper and more capable. Throughout the shoot, I also strived to capture the character's subtle combat body language—such as the grip tension on props and the habit of shifting center of gravity with slightly bent knees. Although balancing high heels on a cylindrical plinth to adjust seated poses required finding specific support points, mastering it turned the constrained setting into a compositional advantage.
Shooting inside a pure white cyclorama studio removed cluttered distractions, allowing viewers to focus purely on the color palette and costume textures. From the sci-fi aesthetics of the props to the sheen of the bunny ears, everything harmonized seamlessly. In front of the camera, there was no need for exaggerated sentimentality; letting Toki's concise, efficient operational logic flow through subtle movements and gaze was enough. A great cosplay photography piece is never just about piling on costumes, but distilling the character's core aura. I feel this attempt closely matched my vision, making the whole process an immensely fulfilling creative journey.
