This time, I shot Rei Ayanami cosplay Convention photo sets in Maogong's Studio 2, making use of the attached Retro server room corner scene. It was shot in the Kuro Rei studio set, so the overall atmosphere was cool and dim.
Sharing the overall experience of this shoot: this costume truly tested the control of details—especially the eyepatch on my head, which took some effort to adjust before shooting so it wouldn't slip while looking natural. The wig color absorbs a lot of light in dim environments; to faithfully recreate that fair, detached complexion, the on-set lighting demands were quite strict. Without careful attention, the tones between the face and wig could easily mismatch, so the photographer dedicated considerable effort to lighting control. As for the costume, the white short-sleeve shirt paired with a dark blue pinafore dress and a red ribbon bow tie created a classic red-white-blue contrast that looks stunning under any lighting, and when paired with White stockings, the overall visual impact was striking. Kneeling in this outfit on the rough carpet easily caused the White stockings to wrinkle around the knees; to achieve the ideal leg contours, I repeatedly adjusted my kneeling posture, leaving my thighs and knees somewhat sore.
In this Retro server room scene, surrounded by vintage CRT monitors, oscilloscopes, and mechanical keyboards, having cool-toned light cast across my face really tested subtle eye expressions. Since the character's design is inherently aloof, I maintained an expressionless, slightly upward-looking gaze into the camera throughout. The red colored contacts stood out distinctly in the dark, and paired with the white gauze over the eye, conveyed an intense sense of detachment. The green glow from the old monitor screens became the sole splash of color in the frame, maximizing the austere atmosphere.
As a scene leaning into mechanical and detached aesthetics, this room aligned seamlessly with the character's research background, and post-processing focused on preserving this retro industrial feel. This shoot primarily aimed to showcase the storytelling depth of the character even in static moments through slightly low-angle shots, kneeling postures, and natural hand placements. The lighting utilized mainly top light and side light, which beautifully contoured facial features while dimming the background to emphasize the subject. Due to limited time, I selected several dynamic shots to share as Convention photo sets, covering close-ups and environmental scenes. Although wearing thin white clothing in a cool-toned environment made it easy to catch a chill, seeing the chilly, crisp texture in the final photos made all the effort worthwhile. This Neon Genesis Evangelion cosplay experience provided new insights into both styling recreation and atmospheric control, testing my understanding of the character's temperament. Moreover, the texture of the White stockings paired with the blue skirt in dim light turned out much better than expected, offering great creative potential for photography enthusiasts who enjoy this detached style or vintage ambiance.
