I put extensive groundwork into prepping for this Honkai: Star Rail Herta cosplay convention shoot. The wardrobe is packed with nuanced construction, most notably the structured bustier corset shaping the torso. To capture that crisp, dimensional architectural silhouette, the garment utilized high-gloss faux leather trimmed with delicate purple lace and anchored by her signature silver openwork chest emblem. Under the harsh venue floodlights, the metallic and glossy leather textures threw sharp specular glare, requiring the photographer and me to continuously calibrate shooting angles to prevent blowouts on the highlights.
The lower-body styling combined a white pinstripe pleated mini skirt over black safety shorts. Down below, I wore sheer black tights (stockings) paired with knee-high lace-up black boots, creating a sharp, commanding vertical line. An asymmetrical black garter strap with a silver starburst charm cinched the right thigh, introducing an eye-catching focal point for detail shots of the legs. Draped over this was a dramatic floor-sweeping coat transitioning through an ombré gradient of black, deep navy, and violet, etched with glittering silver constellation totems. Maneuvering through the convention floor meant constantly hoisting the sweeping cape to prevent it from tangling in passing crowds. While the polished convention flooring caused tricky ambient reflections, our wide-aperture prime lens cleanly melted the crowded background into creamy bokeh.
The headpiece was an exaggerated, wide-brimmed pointed witch hat. Its brim was adorned with filigree decals and dusted at the crown with iridescent galaxy shimmer. Because of its massive scale, even the slightest breeze caused it to tilt, so I kept one hand braced against the brim throughout posing. The wig was a dense, waist-length silver-grey unit fading into violet ombré tips; given the heavy fiber volume, it was prone to friction tangles, keeping me busy backstage with detangling sprays and fine-tooth combs. For makeup, I emphasized violet cosmetic contact lenses framed by deeper smoked eye contours, channeling her aloof, enigmatic genius.
Convention photography differs fundamentally from studio work due to uncontrolled ambient conditions. Navigating overhead industrial halogens and chaotic booth backlighting required relying on off-camera speedlights to overpower ambient exposure. The photographer directed dynamic, tension-filled posing: one hand steadying the brim while the other hovered near the collar, or lifting the hem with a subtle torso twist to cleanly delineate the tailoring and bodily curves. In several frames, I actively arched my back to elongate posture and keep lines upright. Navigating crowded booths carries a constant risk of snagging delicate hosiery against display corners, so I packed two spare pairs of stockings just in case.
The entire shoot was an absolute blast. Assembling Herta's attire is certainly intricate—from tightening the corset boning to securing the thigh ring, gearing up demanded patience. Moving between halls required lifting the train to avoid footprints, but after an afternoon on the floor, the final selects captured the lighting, poise, and haughty aura we set out to achieve.
