This set of Rock style Rei Ayanami cosplay photos took a lot of effort from preparation to shooting, and today I have the time to detail some moments and thoughts from the shoot.
Costume Concept: The initial consideration was how to blend Rei Ayanami's inherently cool, aloof aura with rock elements. Thus, a blue, white, and red color scheme was chosen. The top is an off-shoulder gray tight-fitting design paired with translucent straps in matching tones, while the bottom features dark blue loose trousers specially designed with high slits. Complemented by white fluffy trims and red belt buckles, portions of the legs are revealed. To better fit the rock persona, I deliberately wore over-the-knee White stockings with metal chains hung on them—the metallic texture and the softness of the stockings created a striking contrast.
Prop Preparation & Styling: It took a long time to find this white electric Guitar, specifically choosing an all-white model to balance the visual effect. The black plush bear doll with a red collar beside it was the finishing touch; its inherently cute charm formed a sharp visual contrast with the cool black cross behind it. The light blue wig was quite challenging to style, requiring careful shaping of a slightly tousled, fluffy texture. Paired with understated makeup and a distant gaze, it came closer to capturing that icy yet breathtaking aesthetic.
Shooting Experience: The studio lighting effect was a major highlight this time. A massive beam of oblique light pierced across the entire blue background; such a hard light source is very flattering for accentuating character silhouettes, bringing intense dramatic tension to the frame. The kneeling pose in Photo 2 was the result of repeated adjustments with the photographer—showcasing feminine grace and allure under such hard lighting while harmonizing with the character's unperturbed composure. The photographer kept reminding me not to look too sharp, but rather to keep a distant look while doing my best to showcase the waist and leg lines. Photo 1 features a standing pose looking back over the shoulder while holding the Guitar, using the visual weight of the electric Guitar to anchor the frame and convey dynamic tension.
In post-processing, we largely preserved the high-contrast hard tone of the raw shots, adding only a touch of film grain to emphasize the raw, authentic grit of rock music without excessive filters, maintaining this chilled, avant-garde atmosphere.
Reflections on Contrast: This was a pure character portrayal. Although modern attractive design elements like White stockings and high slits were incorporated into the outfit, the overall atmosphere stayed closely aligned with the character's signature detachment. Most depictions of Rei Ayanami that people have seen are passive, but this rock theme gave her a more active sense of emotional release—that is the rock Rei as I understand her. While waiting for lighting adjustments, the chill of that blue light cast across my body, combined with the shadow of the cross, resonated deeply with the sense of destiny in Neon Genesis Evangelion.
This was a truly special photoshoot experience, and being able to express my understanding of the character and rock style through photos was immensely joyful.
