This time shooting the EVA Plugsuit version of Rei Ayanami from Neon Genesis Evangelion, the preliminary preparation work was indeed much more time-consuming than expected.
First, let's talk about the costume. This EVA Plugsuit is mainly spliced together by high-reflective black glossy material and skin-colored translucent mesh, which has extremely high requirements for the pattern and body fit. Even the slightest wrinkle would be magnified under the lights, so it took a long time to adjust the positions of the edges and seams when wearing it. The wig is light blue-gray short choppy hair. After trimming to create a sense of layers, paired with red contact lenses, the overall cold and detached feeling of the character was initially established.
The prop for the shoot is a red long-handled twin-pronged weapon. This prop is very heavy, and holding it in hand requires a certain amount of arm strength support. Especially when striking some large movements like turning sideways or looking back, to maintain balance, core strength and arms are both working hard. To make the movements look natural and match the character's temperament, we adjusted the angles countless times in front of the mirror on-site.
In terms of photography, a Fuji X-S10 was used this time, paired with two lenses: 27mm f1.2 and 18-55mm f2.8-4. The shooting venue was chosen in a Sci-fi scene cosplay setup full of futuristic feel; the cool-toned blue fluorescent tubes, metal chains, and the cabin structure behind added a lot to the atmosphere. The large aperture of the 27mm f1.2 was very powerful when shooting half-body close-ups, with a soft out-of-focus transition, which can well highlight the character's face and costume texture.
To present the texture of the glossy leather clothing better, we adjusted the lighting repeatedly for a long time. We used side-backlighting and highlights to highlight the material's reflection and avoid large areas of blown-out white. Because the costume is relatively form-fitting, every breath and movement amplitude needed to be precisely controlled, and the metal chains in the background also became reference lines for composition. We shot close-ups and full-body shots from different angles, including tension-filled frames using wide-angle upward shooting, and eye-level compositions displayed using standard focal lengths. The entire shooting process was not just about posing, but also balancing lens language and interaction with the scene.
The final photo output effect was still very satisfying, with both texture and atmosphere meeting expectations.
