This shoot took place at a venue with standing water. In tune with the "art is an explosion" caption of the post, an explosive visual effect was added to the head position in the reflection during post-processing to intensify visual conflict. It had just rained before the shoot, and the puddles were chilly. To capture the full Reflection on water angle, the photographer was practically lying flat on the ground holding the camera right against the water surface; the grass was also very damp, splashing quite a bit of muddy water onto us.
Rei Ayanami's outfit consists of a dark cyan pinafore dress paired with a white short-sleeved shirt, Black stockings, and chunky white shoes. Styling the wig before shooting took considerable effort—the straight bangs of the blue hair had to be perfectly neat, as even slight messiness would look unkempt. Since the character is defined as a cool, quiet, emotionless girl, facial expressions had to remain somewhat vacant and body language slightly rigid, relying on glancing back over the shoulder to build visual tension.
The Black stockings had little reflection under the overcast sky, but the texture was fantastic. To bring out the leg lines, we adjusted the skirt hem position and standing stance, revealing only the lower thighs down to just above the knees. The wind was a bit strong, blowing the skirt and disturbing the composition, but fortunately, we captured the perfect posture in the end.
The shooting process truly tested our patience. The water reflection shots relied on a symmetrical composition using the water surface—standing at the edge of the puddle while the reflection carried custom flame explosion effects gave the finished photo immense contrast. In post-processing, focus was placed on preserving the cool tones of the water surface and cleaning up extraneous clutter to make the overall atmosphere even crisper and cooler.
My biggest takeaway from cosplaying this set is that success often relies on the close synergy between the photographer's camera angles and the model's posing. Pairing Black stockings with a uniform dress seems simple, but maintaining clean, sharp lines demands constant mindfulness of posture. I have always loved characters with cool, aloof personalities. I hope the shooting techniques and post-processing concepts from this shoot offer some helpful reference for fellow Cosplay photography enthusiasts, and huge thanks to the team for pulling together this photo set.
