[Asuka Cosplay] Neon Genesis Evangelion: Rock Band Everyday Life

This time, I tried a different style for Asuka: taking off the plugsuit, slipping into a red-and-white striped tank top, and channeling the energy usually spent piloting an EVA into jamming with a band. While this outfit looks simple, it actually features plenty of details. The form-fitting red-and-white striped camisole was tailored to accentuate the waistline, layered beneath a loose black jacket worn halfway off the shoulders to add a casual, effortless streetwear vibe. The lower half paired black over-the-knee Stockings featuring white striped cuffs with black-and-white platform sneakers, echoing the character's classic color palette.

To match the Band dōjin setting, the shoot set was prepped with a drum kit, an electric guitar, and a vintage silver boombox radio. That radio was actually quite heavy; holding poses with it in one hand or dangling it while standing left my arm genuinely sore. To master that nonchalant, cool attitude, I practiced posing with the headphones and lifting the radio in front of the mirror several times. The photographer used a Sony A1 paired with a 28-70mm F2.0 GM lens; its resolving power is insanely sharp, magnifying even the slightest unnatural facial tension. This forced me into total immersion without letting my guard down for a second.

The guitar was another key prop for this shoot. Although I have some casual experience playing, I specifically familiarized myself with the feel before shooting to capture authentic fretting and strumming postures. Squatting down or sitting on the drum stool cradling the guitar, the strap length and the angle of the guitar body underwent repeated micro-adjustments to ensure compositional balance. Sitting on the white floor with microphones and stands scattered around, looking at the playback on screen really felt like spending an afternoon jamming in a rehearsal studio.

Throughout the process, I strived to maintain a tsundere, confident demeanor. After all, it is just mediocre at best—compared to piloting an EVA to save the world, forming a band and playing rock music felt so much more liberating. The shoot featured many floor-seated shots, where the texture of the black Stockings delivered fantastic chiaroscuro under the cool studio lights, gracefully showcasing the leg contours through crossing and stretching. While some might think this is just an ordinary striped tank top with black Stockings, the more everyday and basic the attire, the more it tests your expressive depth.

By the time the shoot wrapped, night had already fallen, and my arms and legs were definitely stiff from holding specific postures for hours. This Band dōjin project fulfilled my dream of playing music—free from the heavy, grim backdrop of EVA, with just simple red-and-white stripes and an electric guitar. The magic of Anime-style photography lies right here: allowing you to live out an entirely different life in a parallel dimension.
