Rei Ayanami's design naturally carries an aloof sense of detachment; wearing this white battle suit under cool-toned lights made that cool, distant aura emerge even more effortlessly.
Let's discuss some details of this shoot. The material of the white combat suit is rather rigid and extremely skin-tight, which accentuates body contours while making it quite a chore to put on and take off. When posing, one must pay close attention to the direction of creases—raising an arm shouldn't look stiff, and the angle of looking back over the shoulder needs to be carefully chosen so leg lines appear crisp and sleek beneath the suit. The prop spear was heavier than expected; holding it with one hand required arm strength to stabilize it, which in turn gave the arm lines a more toned look under exertion and felt pleasantly substantial in hand.
In terms of light and shadow, the photographer used side backlighting to shine through the blue wig, creating a brilliant rim glow through the hair strands. The massive Unit-01 in the background was softly blurred to make the foreground subject pop. It was actually quite cold during the shoot, requiring continuous movement to maintain stamina. Controlling lights at night is tricky, and we adjusted the camera angle and positions several times just to find the perfect angle of luminescence, allowing the body contour to stand out crisply through the water mist. This Mecha style Night photography approach worked wonders.
The pose in the first photo was truly a test of balance: the raised arm had to stay steady while leaning slightly backward, displaying the curves of the battle suit while preserving that quiet demeanor. The second shot looking back while holding the spear simulated emotions during a lull in combat; the gaze needed to be slightly distant and unfocused, without forcing intensity.
This set primarily aimed to convey the feeling of insignificance before giant machinery alongside the character's unique tranquility. The night lighting filtered away redundant color clutter, leaving only the intertwining of blues and greens, granting the frame a sci-fi, 2D aesthetic texture. Though the shooting process was demanding, seeing the final results made me feel that cold, sharp atmosphere was faithfully recreated. The photographer's composition was also very thoughtful, opting for side profiles rather than straight-on shots to reveal richer nuances in the character's expression.
The color gradients and bokeh in the final shots were so natural that viewing the raw files made me realize minimal post-processing was needed. This shoot gave me a deeper appreciation of the character—it's not merely a visual costume, but an atmosphere that transcends the frame. There was no need for forced acting; just standing there, working in harmony with the light, was precisely how it should be. The bodysuit fabric easily wrinkles during movement, but under this cool lighting, it actually added realistic tactile depth. Before shooting, my biggest worry was wardrobe slips or unflattering flaws, so I did plenty of homework beforehand and continuously adjusted postures on-site. Being enveloped by massive armor gave a strong sense of pressure, which actually helped me immerse into the emotions. The photographer lighting through the mist was absolutely stunning. All in all, it was a very fascinating shoot.
