The moment sunlight filtered through the glass dome of Joy City onto the red brick staircase, I knew today's set of Fujifilm portrait photos was bound to be a success. Meeting up with Mao Dawang at Jing'an Joy City today, we set out to capture this JK uniform concept for Roxy. For the wig, I specifically chose a pale blue with subtle grey undertones, styling delicate wisps around the forehead to pair with blue eyes, giving the overall look a cool, airy presence.
The sailor uniform features a classic white base accented by navy striped collars, with a dark blue bow and double-breasted gold metal buttons at the chest serving as crowning highlights. On the lower half, a dark pleated skirt is paired with black knee-high socks and brown loafers—a timeless combination that visually elongates the legs. Scouting for natural light inside the mall, the massive green living wall and adjacent red brick steps offered an unbeatable interplay of light and shadow. Controlling the lighting ratio is vital for JK uniform shoots like this. We picked several side-backlit angles, allowing the sunlight to trace the contours of the wig and cast gorgeous rim light along the strands, while using a reflector to softly lift facial shadows, ensuring the skin tone popped cleanly against the blue hair and green foliage.
For the opening seated pose, I deliberately shifted my center of gravity backward, letting one leg drape naturally while gently bending the other. This showcased both the crisp folds of the pleated skirt and the rim of the knee-high socks, while the leather loafers caught nice, subtle highlights. The shot holding up a leaf was an impromptu idea upon noticing that large potted plant; using a broad leaf to block harsh overhead glare helped soften facial lighting while adding a playful, interactive touch. In the crouching pose on the steps with hands softly clasped, I had Mao Dawang shoot from a slight high angle, letting the staircase blur into a gentle recession for a grounded, balanced composition. The shot carrying the black leather bag focused more on the casual streetwear aesthetic, with a small plushie charm dangling from the strap to balance the formal feel of the sailor suit.
Fujifilm's color science renders this blue-and-white palette like a dream. The warm interior ambient lights mingled with cool daylight pouring in, while the warm tones of red brick and the cool green of the foliage created an organic, natural framing. We leisurely snapped photos while enjoying sweet dessert soups, stopping whenever an interesting beam of light caught our eye. The entire session was effortless and breezy, avoiding rigid poses in favor of candid moments—adjusting the necktie, casually playing with a braid. Embodying this character, what mattered most to me was a relaxed ease: no forced dramatics, just standing quietly, or channeling a slightly aloof, adorable languor that naturally brings the outfit to life. Still have proper retouching ahead, but sharing these straight-out-of-camera shots for now—gorgeous lighting truly saves so much effort in post-production.
