This time doing Kusuko cosplay, a lot of thought went into matching the wig and glasses. Because Kusuko in The Disastrous Life of Saiki K. has pink short hair and iconic thin-rimmed glasses, in order to restore that feeling of being both daily and slightly indifferent, the trimming of the wig and the treatment of the hairline appeared particularly crucial. I chose a slightly fluffy short hair styling, paired with purple contact lenses, which can present a state with a slight sense of distance yet full of life under natural light. In terms of clothing, the cyan-green sailor suit and red bowtie are classic combinations, and the cut and material of the clothes presented a great sense of layering in front of the lens. Paired with Black knee-high socks and platform leather shoes, the overall styling fits the modern campus style even better. In terms of makeup, I deliberately practiced subtraction, avoiding overly heavy colors, using a natural-leaning base makeup paired with light-toned eyeshadow, focusing on outlining the sharpness of the gaze with eyeliner to prevent the makeup from overshadowing the character's own daily setting.
This shoot was chosen in several urban outdoor scenes, and photographer Xiao Z understands the atmosphere I wanted to express very well. We reached a consensus during our prior communication that we didn't need too many exaggerated props and special effects, focusing instead on body language and gaze to convey the character's traits. For example, on the city pedestrian bridge, I tried a dynamic pose with one leg kicked back; the metal railing and the modern architecture in the background formed a stern urban feel, creating a wonderful collision with the character's daily vibe. In another set of photos on the bridge, I grabbed the bag strap and stood sideways, and the blue sports single-shoulder bag also became a great prop, filling the entire frame with the daily vibe of after-school. The lighting on that day was fantastic, natural light hitting the pink hair made it look very translucent, and the camera's color reproduction was also very accurate.
To highlight Kusuko's traits, we also deliberately took some close-ups. The action of pushing up glasses is a detail I really like; paired with purple contact lenses and thin-rimmed glasses, it can well convey the character's gaze that seems casual yet insightful into everything. In the one sitting on the concrete steps, I placed the blue schoolbag beside me and relaxed completely; this static composition can even better highlight the colors of the Sailor suit cosplay and the calmness in the character's personality. When on the waterfront walkway, I stepped my foot on the stainless steel isolation post, with a large steel structure bridge in the background. This posture is somewhat domineering while carrying a bit of daily casualness, and the matching of the calf lines and Black knee-high socks is very full of tension in the lens. Finally, on the park lawn, I tried the action of kneeling on one knee with one hand pointing forward, against a background of urban high-rise buildings and green trees. This dynamic pose was actually shot quite a few times, because it was necessary to ensure the arc of the skirt hem and the coordination of the character's posture, while also balancing the foreground hand movements so as not to block the subject; fortunately, the final effect was very natural.
The whole set of pictures did not deliberately try to build a grand narrative, but just wanted to place the character in the daily city, letting her walk, stand, sit naturally, or make slightly chūnibyō actions on the lawn. For me, cosplay's biggest fun is experiencing the life states of different characters in different scenes. The process of walking around the city wearing this outfit is an immersive experience in itself. From clothing adjustments to repeated attempts at every action, it was all to present the most ideal state in front of the lens. In this process, I gradually felt the unique magnetic field on the character, that feeling of seeming to care little about everything on the outside, yet having one's own persistence deep inside. I hope everyone, when viewing this set of photos, can also feel this daily yet wonderful atmosphere.
