Celebrating the Onmyoji 10th Anniversary, I brought this styling of Minglu Zhulang cosplay to life. Trimming the wig required immense patience; to sculpt layered, voluminous white hair, I thinned and styled it repeatedly, tying the red side ribbons strictly according to the canon design. For makeup, the focus was on crimson eye blending paired with amber contacts, dialing the character's aloof, mystical aura to the max. The Antler cosplay antlers atop my head served as the visual anchor: golden branching horns combined with thick hemp rope and a black eboshi hat instantly transformed my entire presence upon wearing them. To echo the headgear, an open-collared white shirt was layered with multi-tiered golden necklaces, which not only contoured my neckline but also enriched the overall visual depth.
The red-and-black armor on the lower half and the colossal white rope at the waist were the true centerpieces. The alternating red-and-black plates, golden chains, and tassels carried genuine heft, and the clinking metal sounds while walking felt wonderfully authentic. Wide-legged red trousers paired with the massive shimenawa rope at the waist broadened the silhouette visually, though it certainly added mobility challenges—especially when sitting, requiring careful adjustments of each armor plate. In my hand, the white-scabbard katana, with golden detailing on the tsuba guard, popped vividly against the dark backdrop; holding it not only diversified my poses but also balanced my center of gravity nicely.
The interior studio setting utilized tatami mats and folding screens. A dark folding screen adorned with gold leaf and cranes, paired with red and white lanterns, bathed the room in warm yellow light that steeped the whole environment in dark Japanese fantasy. In the first shot, I deliberately framed through a foreground pillar to add depth of field, making the frame appear as though peering into a secretive sanctum. In the subsequent seated poses, slightly opening the upper garment revealed the undershirt and necklaces, which, paired with a sake flask and cup, conveyed a leisurely yet commanding demeanor. Light glinted across the metal bracers, bringing out every texture. Wearing this getup was far from easy—particularly during prolonged seiza kneeling—yet seeing the fabric textures and character presence in the finished photos made everything worthwhile.
Cosplay is never just about wearing garments; it is a deep understanding and embodiment of a character's soul. Scrutinizing every nuance ensures the best visual presence before the lens. Minglu Zhulang has so many fascinating traits to unearth, and this shoot was accomplished through continuous experimentation. From styling the wig and strapping into the intricate armor to discovering camera angles, the entire journey was immersive. Collaborating with the photographer, we focused heavily on using light and shadow to accentuate fabric textures, like metal specular highlights and fabric drape creases. Seeing the final results proved that early preparations and on-site sweat were fully rewarded. Enormous thanks to the photographer for capturing these vivid moments. Commemorating the Onmyoji 10th Anniversary milestone with this Japanese style cosplay set feels profoundly meaningful.
