The overall atmosphere of this Onmyoji Shiranui cosplay Convention photo set turned out even better than anticipated. Because it was shot outdoors at night, aiming to create an artistic concept blending lanterns with the woodland, light control became the central core of the entire shoot. I used a warm-toned rim light on the background paired with a cool-toned key light from the front; this interplay of warm and cool temperatures added rich texture to the frame.
The fabric of the outfit is very unique: that semi-sheer pink outer robe creates a breezy, ethereal feel when walking, accentuating the figure wonderfully, though it easily gets messy. Since it isn't strictly anchored, a gust of wind sends it fluttering everywhere, requiring constant fold adjustments during shooting to keep the garment's silhouette three-dimensional. The white undergarment and checkered obi belt have great texture, paired with red-trimmed white tabi socks and wooden platform geta clogs for an exquisite Japanese-style girl look. However, wearing the geta for extended periods truly rubbed against my feet, leaving my heels rather sore.
The wig was pre-styled with long twin tails and red ribbons; it was quite heavy on the head, putting noticeable strain on the neck over the course of the day. For makeup, to capture Shiranui's aloof yet妖异 (alluringly spectral) aura, I emphasized red eyeshadow and the forehead crest mark. When posing with the folding fan held up to obscure the face, my arm trembled from holding it, but I endured it patiently to capture that veiled, enigmatic mystery on camera.
Preparing this styling took considerable time—the large folding fan prop alone was quite hefty in hand. Posing required varying dynamics, such as holding it from low to high or resting it behind the back; without sufficient arm strength, capturing that flowing grace is tough. The photographer worked at a brisk pace, guiding my poses thoroughly throughout—explaining how to fold the fan, where to place hands, and how many degrees to tilt the head. We had multiple retakes, especially for the closed-eye shot, which required balancing a relaxed expression while leaving the eyes slightly ajar to evoke that dreamy, captivating gaze. The makeup featured reddish-brown tones combined with dark red lips, enhancing facial dimension under the warm night lighting.
For full-body shots, I deliberately adjusted my posture to make the silhouette more upright and legs look longer, aligning with the character's graceful poise. The post-production team also did a remarkable job with visual effects, especially the shot with entwined red and blue butterflies, which highlighted dynamic light and shadow while conveying the character's supernatural essence. For cosplayers who love nighttime Convention photo shoots, my personal advice is to communicate the key light direction with your photographer in advance; otherwise, facial tones will look dull and costume layers will flatten out. Adjusting the distance and angles of multiple lights makes a world of difference.
To share a small styling detail: the inner layer is designed as shorts beneath a long draping skirt hem, which looks like a long gown but doesn't conceal the leg lines. Paired with white socks, it flatters leg shape while adding an elegant, subtly alluring charm. To achieve great Convention photo results, don't shy away from experimenting with angles despite the physical exertion. Grip the ground firmly with your feet during full-body shots for stability, and relax your shoulders downward during close-ups to elongate the neck. Embodying a beloved character isn't easy, and perfecting every detail ensures there are no regrets.
Between shooting breaks, I mostly rested while standing, as sitting in this sheer fabric risked leaving stubborn creases. Maintaining an upright posture throughout left my back quite sore by the end, but seeing such an exceptional final outcome made all the effort completely worthwhile.
