We wrapped up this photoshoot right beside the circular pond at Xixi Wetland. Wearing this blue-and-white maid dress under the sweltering midsummer heat, I genuinely sweated buckets.
The costume is richly detailed: a deep navy dress layered with a ruffled white apron, complemented by a lace headdress, white gloves, and stockings for this Maid with white stockings styling. While indoor studio shoots are manageable, venturing outdoors onto the open lawn for a grassland photo shoot meant immense friction between the white stockings and the grass blades; after finishing, I found slight pilling in spots rubbed by foliage. On top of that, the searing heat made the wig cling uncomfortably to my neck, and makeup was prone to fading, requiring our makeup artist to touch up powder every twenty minutes before I hoisted the bubble machine back up to keep shooting.
We prepared a lot of props this time, predominantly that pink bubble machine. Anyone with experience in Bubble machine photography knows that achieving skies filled with uniformly floating bubbles requires not only frequent refills of bubble solution, but also having the photographer shoot in high-speed continuous bursts. I ran and hopped before the lens holding the bubble blower, minding my facial expressions while gauging wind direction, as bubbles pop instantly and timing is tricky to catch. To complement the theme of this Summer maid cosplay, we also brought along red apples, a plush puppy toy, and a vintage film camera. Sitting on the picnic mat hugging the puppy, balancing an apple on my head with a playful wink, or lying back on the mat pretending to take selfies were all organic postures coordinated on the fly.
Since the styling embraces Japanese style portrait photography, on-site lighting was critically important. Tree shade around Xixi Wetland provided soft, natural diffuse light, but direct sunlight along the pond perimeter remained intense, demanding continuous angle adjustments with reflectors to prevent harsh facial shadows. In post-production color grading, I requested a crisp, high-key, translucent aesthetic—preserving the breezy clarity of the blue-and-white tones while subtly tempering saturation and contrast to instill the frames with refreshing summer chill.
An outdoor location shoot on grassy lawns truly tests physical endurance, especially swaddled in a substantial maid dress and stockings. During pauses, I clung to tree shade as much as possible, relying on a handheld mini fan for relief. Yet reviewing the raw shots on camera—seeing that magical split-second where bubbles refracted shimmering iridescent hues in the sunlight—made every effort undeniably worthwhile. Heartfelt thanks to our tireless photographer and crew, who swat bugs away across the grass while snapping away in seamless synchronization. The resulting imagery fulfilled everything I originally envisioned, and I adore the finished atmosphere.
