The railway crossing warning signs paired with yellow-and-black caution poles create an authentic Japanese vibe, and today I managed to capture this set of mix-and-match style photos. The overall concept for the outfit was finalized before setting out: black represents cool aloofness, aqua blue represents naturalness, and polka dots symbolize sweetness. For the outerwear, I selected a loose black top featuring textured fabric and distressed elements; its puffy sleeve cuffs impart a touch of classical elegance, perfectly balancing the lightweight tones of the lower half. The white plush hood on my head serves as the visual centerpiece of the whole look, with light blue drawstrings hanging on both sides echoing the aqua blue tones of the skirt, giving the ensemble instant recognition upon putting it on.
The lower half features a semi-transparent polka dot tulle skirt in light greyish-blue adorned with black polka dots and lace splicing along the hem. This material appears remarkably sheer and airy under filtering sunlight; as I move, the swaying hem creates a subtle equilibrium against the heavier feel of the top. On my legs, I paired solid black opaque tights with thick-soled lace-up black chunky-heeled boots, creating a black tights outfit that firmly anchors the visual center of gravity while elongating the leg lines. Structured boots like these are ideal for urban street or railway crossing photography, as chunky heels offer stability on gravel paths without looking cumbersome.
For makeup, I intentionally opted for a cool and detached aesthetic. Paired with long hair and neat blunt bangs, letting my gaze drift slightly empty instantly brings out the cold edge mentioned earlier. Meanwhile, holding a yellow canned drink as a prop introduces a small splash of bright color into the cool-toned outfit base, preventing the composition from feeling dull. Black, aqua, and yellow form a pleasing warm-and-cool contrast within the frame, and post-processing lighting adjustments focused on preserving the transparent warmth of the sunlight.
For gear, I used a Sony A7M5 paired with two lenses: the Viltrox 35mm F1.8 EVO and 55mm F1.8 EVO. The 35mm focal length is versatile and perfect for wide scene shots and environmental context—such as leaning against guardrails or standing beside warning signs, effortlessly capturing the railway crossing, intersection, distant Japanese-style houses, and the sky. On the other hand, the 55mm at F1.8 creates beautiful background bokeh, anchoring the visual focus sharply on my expression and costume details, like the embroidered texture on the hood, folds in the black top, and the canned drink in hand, rendering razor-sharp detail.
Sunshine was abundant on the day of the shoot. Direct harsh light presents a challenge for lighting control, yet under this intense sunlight, it creates a unique sense of clarity. Combined with the yellow-and-black caution poles and roadside greenery, it infuses vitality and everyday ambience into an otherwise dark and cool outfit style. Without setting up elaborate stages, we simply utilized guardrails around the crossing, barriers along the tracks, and distant city buildings to capture spontaneous, lifelike moments. Whether sitting casually on a railing with legs crossed or folding hands loosely in front, the poses blended seamlessly into the ordinary backdrop. While this casual mix-and-match style doesn't aim for the ornate grandeur of a specific franchise, it better conveys a sense of comfortable authenticity in stunning photography. Bringing to life that blend of distant cool, natural charm, and sweet contrast through the lens left me feeling thoroughly fulfilled.
