The automatic vending machine at night comes with a chilly cyberpunk feel, with cold white light hitting the glass, making it an excellent background for night portrait photography. The theme of this shoot is Japanese style sailor uniform, choosing a blue-and-white color-matched sailor-collared dress with a multi-layered ruffled hem design, accented with a huge blue bow on the chest. To match the overall styling, the hair was styled into a classic blunt bangs twintail, with slightly curled hair ends, and accessorized with a blue bow adorned with pearls on the head. The lower body is paired with white over-the-knee socks and black loafers, and the blue, white, and black color scheme looks very clean visually.
When shooting such vending machine night view subjects, the biggest challenge is the balance between ambient light and character fill light. The light source of the vending machine itself is very bright and tends to be cold. If the character gets too close to the glass, dead-white highlights easily form on the face; if too far, the character blends into the dark night. During composition, the photographer Maodour (@vvDawang) cleverly used the refrigerator door as a foreground frame, making me stand behind the door. Taking water, handing over water, lowering the head to choose drinks—these everyday actions were slowed down in front of the lens, generating a natural sense of interaction instead. That photo of handing over water was actually a candid shot; originally we only intended to test the perspective effect, but as soon as my finger touched the water bottle, the cold air from the fridge and the temperature difference outside condensed a thin layer of water mist on the glass, which with this action created an unexpectedly atmospheric feel.
As a portrait photoshoot, although this outfit has no specific character setting, the sailor uniform naturally carries a youthful, next-door girl's lively vibe. To express this style, facial expression management doesn't need to be too deliberate; slightly relaxing the facial muscles, looking naturally towards the lens with your gaze, or pretending to carefully choose a drink can capture a very natural state. The pairing of white stockings and black leather shoes visually elongates the leg lines. When standing sideways, slightly bending the legs can better showcase the layers of the skirt and the curves of the legs. In a cold light environment, attention should be paid to the light and shadow transition on the side face, utilizing the built-in light strip of the vending machine to cast catchlights in the eyes—this is the secret to night portrait photography.
Because nighttime outdoor shooting has dim light, the shutter speed is usually slower, requiring you to keep your body as stable as possible while avoiding stiffness. On-site, we would play some light music to help the whole person relax. The overall texture of this finished photoset is very translucent; within the cold-toned frame, the contrast between skin and clothing is very comfortable. The real night scene and dynamic light-and-shadow give this set of pictures an extra touch of emotional resonance. Every time after shooting such a subject full of fireworks and cold-light contrast, I find it extremely interesting. In terms of post-processing color grading, the cold tone of the original footage was basically retained, with only soft processing done to skin tones, making the image look closer to the true texture of night. Looking forward to the next night shoot.
